District Police Officer (DPO) Sargodha has been transferred to Gilgit-Baltistan, allegedly on the directives of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, for registering a case against former MPA Aslam Madhiana.
Madhiana had shot at, and injured, a schoolteacher in Madh Ranja last month.
Two weeks prior to that, the teacher, Nafees Khan Lodhi, had accused Madhiana of supervising criminals in the area in an open court hearing conducted by SP Investigation Sarfraz Virk.
DPO Sargodha Mohammed Rizwan registered a case against Madhiana and 10 others, after he shot at Lodhi, and arrested six of the accused including the former MPA’s son-in-law.
Sources said ruling Pakistan Peoples Party lawmakers subsequently pressurised the prime minister to have Rizwan transferred.
Madhiana, however, claimed he has nothing to do either Dr Rizwan’s transfer or the beating of teacher. He claimed he does not even know Lodhi.
Meanwhile, civil society activists protested on Friday and warned the federal government of a strike if the DPO’s transfer orders were not taken back. The traders’ union also warned of a shutter-down strike if the decision was not reverted within 24 hours.
