ISLAMABAD:

To mark the World Kidney Day at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences on Thursday, a large number of doctors, social activists and kidney patients of all ages participated passionately to create awareness about the importance of timely treatment and prevention of renal diseases.

The participants of the awareness walk held banners and placards articulating that the “amazing kidneys”, which “filter 180 litres of [an individual’s] blood every day”, are a “unique gift from our creator” and must be protected. This year’s theme for the day was “Donate - Kidneys for Life - Receive”.

The walk, and the preceding awareness session about the importance of kidneys and treatment of renal disease, was organised by Roche Pharmaceuticals. The walk started from Pims’ MCH Auditorium and culminated at the hospital’s main administration building.

Among the participants were two young girls who are undergoing treatment for renal disease at the hospital. Despite their poor health, they participated in the walk. While the two girls were aided by their attendants, the more seasoned and some elderly patients walked unaided and carried along their urine bags.

Pims Nephrology Department’s Assistant Professor Dr Sohail Tanveer urged the need to create awareness about renal diseases especially among diabetic and blood pressure patients as they are more vulnerable to such diseases.
