The ceremony was presided over by Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr Javaid Laghari.
Speaking at the ceremony, Principal RCMS Engr Sikandar Hayat highlighted some of the unique features of this state-of-the-art computing facility recently acquired by Nust through financial grant by Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST).
The supercomputer installed in NUST was the fastest GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) based parallel computing system operating in any organisation/ academic institution in Pakistan till date. The supercomputer can perform parallel computation at a peak speed of 132 Teraflops (132 Trillion Operations per second). It is equipped with multi-core processors and graphics co-processors with inter-processor communication speed of 40 Gbps.
Hayat said that besides the supercomputer’s extensive utilisation in the computation-intensive research projects in the areas of Fluid Dynamics and Biosciences, this massively parallel facility can also be utilized to handle huge data processing applications of social sciences such as Flood and Weather Forecasting, Oil and Gas Exploration, energy efficient building designs and national transportation management.
Addressing the event, Laghari appreciated the efforts of the entire team associated with the project and encouraged all institutions to come forward and benefit from the facility acquired by Nust. He assured HEC’s full support in this regard.
Rector Nust Engr Muhammad Asghar, in his welcome address, sharing his vision, specifically mentioned that the acquisition of the supercomputing facility would be a source of inspiration for PhD scholars, abroad, to return to Pakistan.
“This will give an impetus for collaborative research between universities and other research organisations within the country and abroad.”
Dr Imran Akhtar, the key note speaker, gave a highly motivating and thought provoking speech on the occasion, encouraging young researchers to come forward and utilise the facility in solving national challenges in the areas of engineering, bio-informatics, political science, psychology and social sciences.

A Pakistani university BOUGHT a computer. What a Pakistan Zindabad moment! I, a Nust graduate, also bought a laptop and a mobile phone. Please be proud of my achievements.
its a great achievement
The distinction between computing and biology has begun to blur in a way that will have enormous consequences for human health, productivity and longevity.
Supercomputing has also become an essential capability for research in a variety of fields ranging from thermonuclear simulation, weather forecasting, and life sciences to improve human health and crop yields.
There are over two hundred life sciences departments which are engaged in genomics and biotechnology research at various Pakistani universities, and they all can benefit from access to supercomputing.

Host cloud on it ..... for R&D in Pakistani Universities
I bieng the graduate of Nust feel very proud to see this news.
To all other universities, join in guys launch yours and lets have a healthy competition in computing intensive applications running on this.
Congrats NUST.....you deserved it. LUMS, FAST, UET should follow, if they can afford one.
you guys missed to read this "Addressing the event, Laghari appreciated the efforts of the entire team associated with the project and encouraged all institutions to come forward and benefit from the facility acquired by Nust. He assured HEC’s full support in this regard."
one should be proud of every achievement our country is making. i think it is a good place to start and may be more universities will come up with other useful resources.
Man instead of fighting can't no one appreciate the act ?? you call yourself educated ?
Just because Nust launches a supercomputer does not render other universities, especially LUMS, useless.
@atta
Dude clearly you do not know about NUST, this is not some 2nd grade university. And our labs do not rely on WAPDA for operations.we have continuous supply of electricity in our research facilities via generators or UPS.
and for those who say that this is due to the resources of people, well at least one institute of Pakistan is using these resources for a good cause, R&D development in Pakistan. You have to give 'em credit for that. Please be proud of your nation's achievements.
One such cluster exists at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Abbottabad since 2005 I think. ref: http://ciit.net.pk/rndprojects.html
And please correct the title, it would be 'Cluster' not SuperComputer. There is a huge difference between a Cluster and a SuperComputer. For novice, the title is fine but for professions its a totally wrong title :)
Sorry to say but it would be almost useless. The reason behind would be the load shedding happening in Pakistan. In country, where even hospitals don't have electricity, how are you going to power clusters? :)
Thanks GOD that one institute in Pakistan has taken the initiative to build technology for Pakistan. Unlike the useless institutes like LUMS, BNU, Punjab University. Awesome work NUST. Please bring more stuff.
Indeed it provide justification of its ranking in world universities!
A Big Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.............................
Now its seems there is alot to come soon.. FAST , LUMS and many others will follow too.. This would help alot in revolutionizing R&D in PAKISTAN , from technical to industrial to Media Research ... Congratulations PAKISTAN
atlast some news coming out of pakistan which makes non pakistanis appreciate pakistan's growth in the right direction.
Now guys with absolutely no knowledge in this field and with absolutely no achievement in life will spew their life frustrations on this news. Congratulations NUST

My suggestion would be to link this supercomputer to all R&D facilities and universities immediately, so its power can be utilized in a productive manner.
Wow. But also what a waste. This mine is bigger, more powerful and costs more than yours type of stuff should be discouraged especially in academia. Highly disgusting.
NUST didnt make the chips even if they bought processors and memory and put together the machine. This is just using the resources of the people of Pakistan and they should be congratulated and not NUST
