Iran Culture Centre hosted a reception to appreciate the services of Urdu Dictionary Board for the compilation and publication of a comprehensive Urdu dictionary, which was published in 22 volumes.
The speakers said that around 30 per cent to 40 per cent Urdu and Persian words were common. Sarfaraz Tariq of National Language Authority told the audience that the authority was going to compile the first Urdu encyclopedia.
According to him, the Urdu dictionary has around 255,000 words and was compiled within 50 years whereas its English counterpart took 70 years to finish. He paid tribute to the contributions of Moulvi Abdul Haq, Josh Malihabadi, Dr Syed Abdullah, Shan-ul-Haq and other scholars for helping to compile the dictionary.

Realy its a Great Effort by National language authority one must appreciate the work and the effort.
March 15, 2012 If the price, names, addresses & telephone numbers etc of the places where this encyclopedia could be purchased are also displayed prominently, it would add a lot of convenience for the persons (specially those living in other countries) who are interested to buy the same. Presently at least I could not find any clue of these particulars despite spending more than half an hour in searching on the net. Thanks. khurshd khan Katy, Texas, USA
This isnt the first. there are plenty of urdu encylopedias already out there. dont know what NLA is gloating about.
Glad to learn it . great step
Great effort.I wish a similar effort would be made for the punjabi language. It is dying out slowly as punjabis are too ashamed to speak their mother tongue. There aren't any popular punjabi newspapers, there are only 3 punjabi tv channels which is peanuts compared to the population. regional languages should be preserved before they go extinct. The sindh literary circles have been great in promoting sindhi, they've compiled an encyclopedia, numreous books in sindhi,it's great to see sindhi language being preserved for future generations in the written form.one wishes punjabi intellectuals would do the same.
Wonderfull thing happend thank god finally.
