Having just learned of the fresh killings, I relayed the news on to colleagues and students at the cafeteria table. Some looked glumly at their plates but, a minute or two later, normal cheerful chatter resumed. What to do? With so many killings, taking things too seriously can be bad for one’s mental health.
In Pakistan one’s religious faith, or lack of one, has become sufficient to warrant execution and murder. The killers do their job fearlessly and frequently. The 17th century philosopher and mathematician, Blaise Pascal, once observed that “men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it for religious conviction”.
Equipped with just enough religion to hate those with another faith — but not enough to love their coreligionists — Pakistanis have mostly turned their backs on religious atrocities. Exceptionally grotesque ones, such as when 88 Ahmadis quietly praying in Lahore on a Friday were turned into corpses, have also failed to inspire public reaction. Mass executions do not interest Pakistan’s religious parties, or Imran’s Khan’s PTI. For them, only the killings by American drones matter.
The title of this essay deliberately excludes Hindus, Christians, and Parsis. The reason: these communities were never enthused about India’s partition (even though some individual members pretended to be). Indeed, they were soon slapped with the Objectives Resolution of 1949 which termed them “minorities”, hence freaks and outcasts dispatched to the margins. Some accepted their fate, keeping a low profile. Others altered their names to more Muslim sounding ones. The better off or more able ones emigrated, taking valuable skills along with them.
But with Shias and Ahmadis it was different. Whatever they might feel now, they were enthusiastic about Pakistan. Mr Jinnah, born a Gujrati Shia Muslim, believed that Muslims and Hindus could never live together peacefully but that Muslims, of course, could. Chaudhry Zafarullah Khan, an Ahmadi leader, was commended by Jinnah for having eloquently argued the Two-Nation theory, and then appointed by him in 1947 as Pakistan’s first foreign minister. Mr Jinnah died early, but Zafarullah Khan lived long enough to see disillusionment. The inevitable had happened: once the partition was complete, the question of which version of Islam was correct became bitterly contentious.
Until recently, Pakistan’s Shias did not have the self-image of a religious minority. They had joined Sunnis in supporting Mr Bhutto’s 1974 decision to declare Ahmadis as non-Muslim. But now they are worried. The Tribal Areas are convulsed in sectarian warfare: Kurram, Parachinar and Hangu (in the settled districts) are killing grounds for both Sunni and Shia, but with most casualties being Shia. City life has also become increasingly insecure and segregated; Karachi’s Shia neighborhoods are visibly barricaded and fortified.
But while Shias are numerous enough to put up a defence, Ahmadis are not. Last month, a raging 5,000-strong mob descended upon their sole worship place in Satellite Town, Rawalpindi. Organised by the Jamaat-i-Islami, various leaders from Jamaat-ud-Dawa, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Sipah-e-Sahaba addressed the rally demanding the worship place’s security cameras and protective barricades be removed. The police agreed with the mob’s demands, advising the Ahmadis to cease praying. The worship place has now been closed down.
Forbidden from calling themselves Muslims, Ahmadi children are expelled from school once their religion is discovered. Just a hint may be enough to destroy a career. Knowing this, the school staff at a high school in Mansehra added the word ‘Qadiani’ to the name of an Ahmadi student, Raheel Ahmad, effectively eliminating the boy’s chances of getting a university education. The same school also held an anti-Ahmadi programme, distributing prizes to winners.
The latest outrage is that new ID cards, issued by the Punjab government, require the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to insert a ‘Qadiani’ entry in the online forms. Ahmadis now do not have the option of declaring themselves non-Muslims. Instead the government demands that they open themselves to public persecution, a method that Nazi Germany used against Jews.
Even dead Ahmadis are not spared: news had reached the Khatm-e-Nabuwat that Nadia Hanif, a 17-year old school teacher who had died of illness ten days ago, was actually an Ahmadi but buried in a Muslim graveyard in Chanda Singh village, Kasur. Her grave was promptly dug up, and the body removed for reburial.
Pakistan’s state apparatus, for all its tanks and guns, offers no protection to those deemed as religious minorities. Is it just weakness? Or, perhaps, complicity? While swarms of intelligence agents can be seen in many places, they fail spectacularly to intercept religious terrorists. More ominously, recent months have seen state-sanctioned Difah-e-Pakistan Council (DPC) rallies across the country, drawing many tens of thousands. Prominent self-proclaimed Shia and Ahmadi killers, prance on stage while holding hands in a show of unity.
At the Multan DPC rally on February 17, Khatm-e-Nabuwat leaders bayed for Ahmadi blood while sharing the stage with the famed Malik Ishaq, a self-acclaimed Shia-killer. Newspaper reports say Ishaq was freed last year after frightened judges treated him like a guest in the courtroom, offering him tea and biscuits. One judge attempted to hide his face with his hands. But after Ishaq read out the names of his children, the judge abandoned the trial.
What does the Pakistan Army think it will gain tolerating — or perhaps encouraging — such violent forces once again? Its jawans pay an enormous price in fighting them, and their offshoots, elsewhere in the country. But perhaps the notion that extremists are Pakistan’s ‘strategic assets’ for use in Kashmir and Afghanistan has captured the military’s mind. Or, post-OBL, perhaps a miffed leadership seeks to show anger at the US through such rallies. Whatever the explanation, Pakistan’s minorities face catastrophe.

Bertrand Russel said somewhere that if suffering is intense and widespread it produces callousness.Empathy makes us human and it is indispensable to the future survival of Pakistanis and everybody else.
Mr Pervez deserves serious attention from everybody in Pakistan and around the world.His essay is well argued and his bold exposition of the state of affairs is admirable.Although insanity has become a modern disease yet we must continue to work for hope and health for our children.Mr Jinnah and some other leaders had considerable reasons to go the way they did.but the tyrants riding the roller coaster of hatred are proving again and again that Muslims at present are unable to run a modern state.We have reasons to blame colonialism' or many others but most of it is our fault and we are paying the most for it.Blaming the whole world will not render any help to the millions of Pakistanis being crushed by poverty' ignorance and Anarchy.
the problem is that there is an acute short of tolerance in ourselves and to gain this tolerance we need good education in our country. these articles are read by those who have already some sense about religious tolerance except a few, we should deliver these messages to those who are involved in these kinds of groups and parties.
@Pakistani Hindu: I fully agree with you. I don't know how have we started slipping on this slope. I feel sad that we are fast turning into a monolithic country and losing our diversity. I am sure, if only Sunni's are left in this country, they will further divide into many more sections and keep on fighting. There is no end to it.
well written , need more people to speak , its not time to define Islam its time to understand humanty

I highly appreciate daring stance by the writer. We need to consider the solution to combat this monster of irrationality and brutality. Civil society, patriotic and philanthropic humans should raise collective voice against such atrocities. Not only Shia or Ahmadis but the whole public must realize the grave situation and play its role to Pakistan a peaceful and livable place for each and every human soul.

There is a blame game when an event becomes news. Why do we keep harping about indifference to minorities. Look around you. The indifference is for everyone but 'me'. We have excelled in selfishness. One of the roots to our national apathy is the abysmal quality of education. If our government had been sincere about education we would have been a much more tolerant and humane society. Do a simple math and try to figure out the %age of fellow pakistanis who can read this article and post a comment. We are decades behind in every kind of development. The only way I can see as a short term is real non-corrupt law enforcement. Who knows who is doing the killings. There is always the foreign hand theory. Places like hunza. Where any crime was unheard of till mid eighties are killing fields now. One feels helpless. We need sincere leadership to bring the hearts together again.
The situation is not as bad as described.This is all because of army intervention in politics. They have bred the religious fanatics to use for their own ends.Now they also realize that they have created monsters which have gone out of their hands. A very decisive majority of Pakistanis is against these hate mongers. When there is democratic rule in the country, the things start improving but again another general comes in.I hope the army leadership realize their responsibility towards the country and cooperate with the government to eliminate people like Malik Ishaq and their organisations.I can assure all that we are very tolerant people and we will over come these problems in near future if the process of democracy continues.
A stupid and baseless approach ... sowie mr hoodbye ... bye bye
True, Vote goes to Moderates mostly ok-proof-80%, only Terrorist try to push by Terror, as Anfal-Sadam in Iraq, Zionist-Behgun in Palistine, Terrorist-YahyaJI-Zia in Pakistan. Global economic success is in US interest! Its biggest donnor of aid to world!! [Israel, Muslims, Atheists, women,.., animals, climate, non-living... ] Research and space-programs. How many satellites space probes, researcher probes it has: hundreds of thousands? Equalent of every muhalla paying for a stallite. Even Bush knows a prosperous Afghanistan, China, Egypt spring, electec Pakistan is good for US and world peace. People may not like our religion or music or curry but no one can deny Only universal truth is Math! Math can be easy just start with 1 + 1 +1; see it creates a straight slope 1, 2, 3, If you add area under this get 0.5, 2, 4.5 Now how does Quran help us? As Prof Salam said in his Nobel acceptance Sura Mulk "look for and make Order within Disorder" So Quran helps the order is the numbers are same 1,2,3 Squared then take Half. A few steps one can predict future of oscillating springs or molecular forces in atoms which generate x-rays or light, or one day Insha-Allah how our brain thinks, Ameen. Do Da Math!
This is all about conspiracy,divide & rule,This is a country where people chose Shia party PPPP to govern not once but many times where shia are only 12 % & sunny s are 80 %. Yes religion is the most important part of our life because it describes rules how to live life as humans these rules are from the creator of this world. Which has justice for all not just human but also for living things & non living things. Every one is trying to push this Nation toward illiteracy of religion.
Those who have declared this article absurd and biased and whatever.. have not gone through or don't have the in depth knowledge of the FEAR of being unsafe.
Just tell me is this the sayings of our Holy Prophet, to kill who ever disagrees with you. but i know you don't have the ears required to listen to this voice.
A very brave and to the point article Pervez Hoodbhoy..
Thanks and may GOD bless you.
Please make a correction in the date of Jinnah's speech that i referred to as 11 August' 1947. Thnaks
It is a pity that we could allow such butchery in our home. Religion is the matter of your own. How can one say that anyone religion or sect is right or wrong, it is just a perspective. It is just the matter of belief. Belief is something we cannot barter and we should not, but why dont we understand that by stopping others believing in something or even wiping out their existence them would not make us better believers. Just follow your beliefs let others follow theirs.
You all blame OUTSIDE agencies for their conspiracy. I ask you ARE YOUR OWN EYES SHUT?
@Zaid Hamid: Mr Zaid Hamid it is a conspiracy fully supported by Saudi Arabia-the friend of Zions.
Let the parliament members and the Ulemas, who participated in certifying muslims as non muslims that when their time comes, the angel who shall come to take their life away would be the angel who normaly takes the life of the animals, not humans!!
Glory be to God the almighty and all knowing, No human has the right to judge others!

@Zaid Hamid: That's what Bani Israel claims.. don't you read the Quran with understanding.. What did Allah do to the "Chosen People".. Read and free your mind...
For Pakistan to be a normal country, like the one in which I grew up--indeed, for it to continue to exist--it will have to get rid of this Sunni-Shia-Ahmadi and Muslim/non-Muslim way of thinking. Pakistanis ought to begin a serious discussion on the critical need for this country to become completely secular. The alternative is, quite clearly, doom.
@Faisal: why do u think the author has quoted this event of expelling the students by just his fancy thoughts!!!!!!!!!!! man this is fact, what u just need to do is search on different news paper sites about ahmedi students expells.....u will find more than 100 news on the subject furthermore i just give u the example of Sir Abdul Salam,ONLY PAKISTANI NOBEL LAUREATE was exiled and still not been considered as a pakistani and not been honored for his marvelous work for humanity.............havent u just come across this? or is that only ur false ego that whenever u people have been shown mirror u guys screem.....y? its reality man......
@Muhammad Shoaib: rightly said sir but u must also consider reading and understanding quran, you will find out that many things,,,,,,,no 1 has the right to declare any ane a non muslim if that 1 says that he is a muslim, u go and read quran about no 1 has given the right to kill any 1,,,,u understand any 1.......and go to ur aalim(any alim) he will stress upon killing of non muslims........so its not ahmedis who r confusing or confused its u people who are mixing issues,if u contact me i can surely give u the references from quran.
Neither the state nor any one else should have anything to do with a citizen's religious beliefs "period"

Deeply saddened to see so many Taliban deaths in 3 days and before that years of nothern-aliance Mujahideen deaths by Taliban. At the height of supposed Talib super power, I asked Gen Hameed Gul Sb. honored guest in Kabul watching show-off of Talib military might on Anniversary Parade, heels of coming to power, why cann't we be kind to own muslim Shia's & Northern Mujahideen? Pushtun are kinder when in power not brutal, power play is part of Pushtun-wali Game Theory keeps society vibrant in our code? He replied until everyone understands the tenants. People asked so brand recognition of Allah-Inside or Islam-Inside is not clear enough? (reference to Intel Inside brand for adorable silicon). Another victim asked him why dont you sacrifice your own blood or your sons? He said he did both sons(not true)!! Opportunity lost, then sad to see Talibs falling out of cargo containers! What a difference 3 days make, God! But I also blame teachers & Hoodbhoy for not simplifying Math so Pushtun or others with language or time barriers can adapt it rather than elite few. As Math is only fact left no one can refute so why not communicate and popularize math. My personal contribution was inventing Digital Video both terrestrial and satellite, iPaq phone ahead of Apple now am trying with 10 pictures to explain most all calculus & Newt physics, another previous small contribution was Gold medal in Nuclear Tech for Pakistan '73, Computer Saazi first Urdu book for designing processor '83, inventions at Intel & Microsoft. Next would like to improve on Einsteins work with Ernest Mach insight, IA. So please converge through Math the universal truth!
Pervez Hoodbhoy. Jazakallh for this act of courage. You have proven that there are people out there who still speak the truth. Given the trajectory of events in next few years this "Beast of Extremism" will self annihilate.
@bigsaf:
at least shias can not complain now ! frankly speaking ahmadiyya beliefs are much more nearer to other sects beliefs comparatively to Shias , even though Shias did favored to put their weight with sunnis ! this is the way which they selected for them selves ! this is the door which they opened from their hand , they can not complain now !
@Faisal:
talk about masses , who have to attend public schools because their parents cant afford to let their children attend a private school , talk about the people who have to go to public hospitals for treatment , you may have some well settled friends from Ahmadiyya community but this does not means that every thing is fine , and please don't forget that we are living in a radicalized society divided into upper and lower class , upper class generally does not take interest in religious affairs ! but when it comes to lower class situation is totally different .
Hoodbhoy is complicating things for nothing. This is a simple issue. Through the second amendment of 1974, in the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, it was decided that "Ahmadis are not Muslims for the purposes of constitution and law". Thus, in a very legal and constitutional way, the State issued a Certificate of Islam to all citizens of Pakistan who called themselves Muslims, barring only the Ahmadis. Now, since the Ahmadis are not certified by the State as Muslims, they are therefore not considered as Muslims. This decision of the Pakistani Parliament was not a whimsical one. It enjoyed and continues to enjoy the support of the Ulema. We, the Muslims of Pakistan, should be proud instead of being apologetic for being certified by the State as Muslims. If any time in the future, the State decides to declare the Shias or Deobandis as non-Muslims too, through a similar constitutional amendment, that too should be acceptable to all. Only the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan can decide who is a Muslim and this is final.
This country is now heading towards the complete destruction indeed ! very right fully said by Dr Hood that why killing of innocent Muslims , by Muslims in the name of Islam and God is not condemned by so called religious parties or other parties ? This is just because all religious parties have such peoples in them through whom they are desiring to impose theirs own version of Islam .
Actually the religion based destruction started right from the day when objective resolution was passed by the religious forces who always condemned separation , that was the first surrender ! 1953 anti ahamdiyya roits was the second surrender and 1974 anti ahmadiyya law was the final surrender which far opened the door for religious fanatics to turn this country in sort of Afghanistan in the name of same religion on which its foundations are erected !
In 1974 there were ahmadis under charge , which triggered a sort appreciation for religious fanatics to call any one out of the fold of Islam which does not follows their brand of Islam , amazingly they were all unite in 74 and now they are all engaged against each other , so can some one ask which one of their stance is correct ? present or past ?
It is interesting that when this article was emailed to me by my friend, the title was "Ahmadis and Shias - Run for your life". However now, the title of this version does not have "Ahmadis and Shaias" in it. The title seems to be amended and this appears to be true because of the way that the author refers to the title in the body of his article and also because of the way, the following link refers to the article while acknowledging Express Tribune as the source. http://www.humanrights.asia/news/forwarded-news/AHRC-FAT-008-2012

Well said.David is just a flunky trying to do what he has been oredered to do, the chief of Cyber war, to fight extremism, says New York Times. His statements about Pakistan affairs are inaccurate and misleading, to say the least. There are no terrists in the world if the USA stops occuppying muslim land.
Dr Houdhbhoy should concentrate on Gods particles and not on Gods people? The clergy does not tell muslims not to study science, but the lack of understanding by Pakistani majority is that they neither speak nor write arabic language and yet say their prayers in arabic language. The Ahmedis should not translate Quraan suras in urdu or even english, which has proven to be different than the majority of Pakistanis Ulemas translations.. This has been the major cause of their problems with people and hence their being put in the cader of non muslims by the parliament, i.e excommunication which is foreign in Islam.
The Yanks footsteps ususaly destabilise the region and this David Nevers knows it. He should listen more to Ron Paul, the republican President candidate and seek an alternative profession, since the USA can no longer live any longer the luxury of the past. They must live within their means, the Saudis and the Chinese are no longer going to support their adventures outside the country.

A Simple Question to my Fellow Countrymen: You have declared me Non-Muslim, You have denounced my Faith, You have declared me Liable to kill, and you have persecuted me...Now that you have Killed Me (Shia/Sunni/Ahmadi/Hindu/Christian…). Do you have control over me going to Jannah or Jahanam? Do you have your say on what Allah decides for me? Actually do you have even authority over how Allah shall treat you for seizing my rights and standing in between me and my Allah SubhanatAllah? When you don't have rights on matters governed by ALLAH SubhanatAllah , how come you have rights on my religion, Faith, Muslim/Non-Muslim, Life, Death, Persecution (which explicitly are meant to be between an Individual and his creator ALLAH SubhanatAllah). You certainly have no rights, still you have taken matters meant for Allah SubhanatAllah in your own hands exceeding your limits so you ought to suffer and face Allah’s wrath. This Chaos, Anarchy, Intolerance, pain, agony, dishonesty, disrespect, hatred, calamities within your lines and in the league of nations are signs for you to mend your ways but you seem not to understand. The inevitable is heading your way, the land PAKISTAN shall live but you’ll be replaced by better people, better nation as this is the law of nature. The Nature governed by Allah SubhanatAllah!!!
May Peace, Love, Humanity Prevails…May righteous sense of things Prevail…Amen
@ZYX:
I don’t see how it makes any difference to a person being killed how is he being killed or who is killing him. There are many more Pakistanis being killed for internal reasons so that’s where most of our attention and anger should be focused too unless you have some political or sectarian agenda to do otherwise.
@XYZ Well, these given examples are of few people not of routine person belong to any community. And from of few highly successes full person, we can not portray a picture that “all is well” of his/her community.
In fact now a day there is a least tolerance level for religion affiliation & common man suffered a lot in this society due to its affiliation with either of community. In General People really mistreat ahmedies and shias as of their religious duty for the “sawab-e-darain”. (Where the swab of mistreating ahmedies are much higher for them and proportional to their ill behavior).
..Really a great article by Mr.Pervaiz!!!!
@hoodbhoy
You have drawn the actual picture of sectarian intolerance of Pakistani. Please do rectify your information Muhammad Ali Jinnah was born in a Shia Ismaili Family.
Good article.. Government ans Army should take action against terrorists.
@Umer:
Is that an argument in favor of the US invasion? The difference is that violence among citizens is an issue of law and order, which we know is broken in Pakistan...we have to work on that. The US however is in invading army and is in an entirely different league when it comes to damage done...they're the ones who created the jihadi situation when it suited them and now they're here to wipe it out, who knows what excuse they'll make next time to re-invade again and again. running for your life is no solution, but I look forward to many of you following that advice.
@ZYX.. seriously, get education!!
Indeed a thought provoking article
Well written article. I agree with what you said. It's such a shame that it has to be this way.
May God bring peace to the world, amin.
Pakistan and Afghanistan are twin states. Historically, Pakistan has always taken care of the interests of Afghanistan, protecting the latter from foreign interventions, interference etc. Pakistan has a full right to decide what happens in Kabul. As a brotherly nation, Rawalpindi and Islamabad are not going to make wrong decisions for Afghanistan.
@ZYX:
Do you show as much anger towards killers of Shias, Ahmadis, Christians, Hindus, Baluchis, Pakhtoons and so on? More Pakistanis get killed by our hands, what about that?
@Shahzor:
Who are you to call Ahmadi Muslims non Muslims what's the difference between you and Hitler then ? You are not God. Khuda ka khauf karo. Check this website out www.alislam.org. may God open your heart & mind.
@Bhindian: Absurd you. Go ahead and pull spil over your head or hide it in the sand like an ostrich does! Ahmadi MUSLIMS are being persecuted in exactly the same way as were the early Muslims.
@Zaid Hamid: Excuse me? Well, do said Hitler as well! I rest my case.
Hey fellows,
The new cyber war chief from the Pentagon has personaly arrivedon this blog. His mission is to fight the extremists! So careful, the extremists should leave the blog to avoid the drone response.
Rex Minori
Worth the read, for all those that deny this fact!
@Zaid Hamid: We can change our condition, solve our problems only when we stop blaming others for our own problems. The way Ahmadis and other non-mainstream religious groups are treated has nothing to do with Yahudis, its the Muslims the self proclaimed guardians of faith that need to change their mind set.
Is it not interesting to note that most violence in Pakistan is allegedly blamed on USA, CIA, Mossad and RAW, who are all lumped together in this blame? Our interest is to see a stable and strong Pakistan that can support and help stabilize the entire region. It is ridiculous to pull USA into the sectarian violence and bigotry that has been going on by a small fraction of intolerant minority of religious bigots since Pakistan’s independence. Blaming this violence on US without an iota of proof helps only to create doubts and confusion, which only helps the terrorists who keep killing without any remorse whatsoever.
Is it not high-time for the conspiracy theorists to give up their agenda of lies and deceit? By doing what they do, do they not become a partner with the terrorists and an accomplice to their agenda of violence? The terrorists will only be left out and completely defeated if all join together in their quest to clean out this mess of terror and death.

I don't understand what they are doing and why. what i believe is that , when a baby comes in world he did not have any religion expects of Humanity. And there is no any religion who did not teach love for humanity. Our Prophet (PBUH) also teach us love for humanity. According to my best of knowledge When Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) comes Madina . There were a Some peoples live who belong with Israel. But Our prophet did not do any thing against them or did not say to stop their worship and destroy their place of worship. And after Returning to Makkah He (PBUH) did not do any thing against humanity. all the religions of that time was free to their worships. If we are the follower of this Prophet (PBUH) so we have to love humanity first. If the ahmadies do indoor worship we have no right to stop them. its the matter among them & all mighty Allah. So i Request to all readers and humans so please adobe your own way & don't try to tease others.
Allah give us right path .Amen
I read few comments saying that they have had Ahmadi class fellows and that Ahmadis generally have no issues in getting an education etc. Its same as saying that there is no terrorism, bombings ,killings in Pakistan because no one on my street had to face a suicide attack/bomb blast. People like this should think twice before commenting. Its shameful and reflects the mindset of Pakistani society.
@Big bad paki:
What is positive about a country going downhill at speed of light?
I am sure the thought must have crossed his mind.
A nation consumed by hate.
@kaalchakra: What proof/evidence you have that violence against minorities is going on at the behest of so called "enemies" of Pakistan. Difa Pakistan Council has openly threatened to shed the minority blood to purify the ambit of the Muslims. If we have a glimpse among the leaders of the council, we come to know that one of them is a retd army Gen. and former Chief of ISI, who used to be very instrumental to fight against the soviets, with the help of thousands of Pakistani youth used in the name of Jihad. I cannot doubt on my Patriotic Army Generals. Are you doubting on them?
@Author Nicely written .People like you are light at the end of the tunnel.The way things are going some violent days are waiting for us.
@Waqas:
How incredibly lame
Does this guy every have anything positive to say about his own country? Why doesn't he just follow his own advise and leave already?!
@Zaid Hamid: you scare me if this is your idea of 'best'.
@Bhindian: which part of this article do you find absurd? The fact that it tells the truth or advocates the rights of minorities?
@Ali Tanoli:"Its a matters of faith mr hoodhbhai".
? to kill people.
Humanity humanity humanity then religion.
@Bhindian: You call this absurd, that someone is highlighting the plight of the ahmadis and other religious minorities? ET should really have an IQ test for people wanting to comment on articles. The sad fact is, its unfortunate that a person like you was blessed with an education as it seems to have done you no good
@Sajid, please don't waste your precious time trying to explain logic to people like @kaalchakra whose brains are still in the 5th century BC, and even by 5th century BC standards he would be considered extremely simple.
There is no majority-minority conflict in Pakistan. 35,000 civilians are killed in suicide attacks after war on terror. Majority of these innocent civilians are belonged to majority sect of Islam in Pakistan. It proves majority is not killing minority.... There is harmony among common people. There are some bigots and hypocrites (in some hundreds) who are killing people. These bigots are in minority present in every sect... by birth in Muslim family cannot become one Muslim... good actions with faith need to become Muslim. There is no concept of chosen people in Islam.
Yes Mr Hoodbhoy, while 99% of the country suffers from a breakdown in law and order and misery at every level, your focus is on just the 1% minorities because they seem to have more "hollywood" value. What about the rest of Pakistan? Aren't we all targets of crime, corruption and hyperinflation? It seems to me that your over-emphasis on minorities stems from your obsession with eliminating religion from the public sphere. Religion is not our problem..a lack of order is!
Very Well written article, when the governing party could not say a single word against the killers of Salman Taseer due to fear no one can expect them to protect the minorities.
One thing is for sure these days its ahmedi, Shia, Christians, Hindus next will be other sects of muslims and then liberal muslims and the list will go on till Pakistan will be awashed in blood.
I don't think we should just lay the blame on our government or law enforcing agencies. We all are guilty, as a nation, we are intolerant. It's not just towards the other sects or other religions, we are intolerant even towards the people from our own sect, cast or creed. Please don't blame our politicians or army, everyone in this country has to change.
Religion is the dividing source among human being. Thinking why God create a source for mankind to hate each others for HIS good. I don't want to follow blindly.
typical indian-media styled self-created story telling!! nothing more!! liberal fascists at their "Best"....
that is why game of politics is a bit different game for a professor of atom !! compares the uncomparable to bash the political parties for no good, just to score a point...
@kaalchakra:
Correct. That honour belongs to petrol dollar spewing Saudi Arabia.
@Kalchakraa, - you must be surprised at the attention you are getting here.
It is Mosad, RAW, CIA, KFC, and Shezan fault for the killing.
Excellent Article. I think the militancy has changed the DNA of 75% of Pakistani which is why most don't react for inhuman activities. Even noe, there is not a single statement from Imran khan who knows the public sentiment is against drones, not massacre of minorities!
@Zaid Hamid: myopic vision
Atleast Muslims have some purpSe in life...
Elementary
We need to stop assuming that these are handiworks of Muslims, or at least of Muslims acting on their own. Making such profound allegations against one's brothers and sisters is simply unnecessary, unless you can prove that conclusively and can provide some real motive.
GP65 also make some totally unfounded allegations and statements. I hope Express Tribune folks will find it in their heart to allow post countering his propaganda - I wouldnt want to rewrite stuff.
Pakistan does not have even a semblance of security for anyone. If the murder of Salman Taseer, the Governor of Punjab, in broad daylight by his own security guard, is any indication of the situation in Pakistan, rights of minorities are of no significance whatsoever. Ahmadis, who live in Chanab Nagar (Rabwah, the town they leased to call it their own in Pakistan about 60 years' ago) is an island of humanity, where local youth carry the burden of protecting their endangered town from the imminent threat of any act of terrorism. They cannot converge to a single, central mosque (located in town center) for their Juma prayers, and woman are asked to remain indoors for the most of the day, due to a barrage of warning and threats they recieve regularly from fanatic mullahs.
As days pass by, I believe Pakistan was a mistake, a failed experiment.
@andleeb:
"A baseless article. If Ahmedias are indeed being persecuted, why are they not leaving for India in mass numbers? Why are they still living in Pakistan? This article is tarnishing the tolerant image of Islam."
That is because India does not allow emigration of people from Pakistan. Even the Hindus and Sikhs who crossed over are not readily being given citizenship and official asylum. While the Hindus and Sikhs left in Pakistan were unwilling victims of the Partition, the Ahmedis and Christians enthusiastically supported the formation of Pakistan.
Anyways, it is a fact that scores or Ahmedis are indeed emigrating to other countries.
very well defined the current situation Mr. Hoodbhoy. @Zaid Hamid exterimst approach always. truth must be accepted.
gp65
On Ahmadis, you appear to falling into the trap of emotionalism. Unless you are a firm believer in Islam, in which case you are totally justified in presenting whatever view of Islam you think best serves its purpose, your statements that Ahmadis are Muslims or that Muslims response to Ahmadism is driven by some 'non-understanding' of Islam or the Quran is highly suspect, Please keep in mind, Indian government is no source of knowledge regarding the great religion.
Unless the religion is made a private matter, these atrocities will continue to happen to each and every community. This can be done only through education, education and more education.
gp65
Banner ji Chatter ji Mookhar ji is tripple honorific of great respect for the outstanding scholar you so rudely called merely Shormila Bose. Even her enemies give the singular lady more respect by referring to her as Sharmila, If you were trying to make fun of her first name, please don't.
Reading books is an excellent form of self amusement. Understanding them helps. Ms BjCjMj contribution is not the 200,000 number but that Pakistani army was a brave and valiant army merely responding professionally to extreme provocation by Mukti Bahini terroristsm that Pakistani army carried out no rapes, no Pakistani army carried out no systematic genocide or killings.
You may believe what you will, depending upon what sources you choose to look at. Yes Pakistani army and Islamists who supported them are also honorable sources, and they have a right to have spokesmen for them as well.
We Pakistani non-muslims, atheist, seculars should bonds together and make a force against Sunni's who have been ill treating us for more then 64 years! We shud give them a tit for tat reply!
Throughout history minorities have always enjoyed protection and safety within Islamic caliphates and kingdoms. It is well known that there was a thriving Jewish population in Islamic Andalus. There are still Jews in Turkey living peacefully. If we declare Ahmadis as minority then there is absolutely no justification for harming them in any way . Persecution of minorities is a very un-Islamic practice. The irony is that a very small minority of extremists are driving the anti-Ahmadi agenda in our country and we must oppose this. It is encumbent on the educated classes to take the lead on this. There needs to be visible and deliberate harmony between Shias, Sunnis, Ahmadis , Christians etc. Only that way we can begin to make inroads into making our society a tolerant place although I dont see that happening in any of our lifetimes. And yes I also believe that Ahmadis have mosques, not just places of worship. For the record I am a sunni but I believe that the Day of Judgment will reveal who was right and who was wrong in this world.
@kaalchakra: I guess you have never seen or attended any religious gathering where shia's are branded kafirs and "wajbul qatal".Never seen wall chalking actively asking for killings of Ahmadi's. Never seen Amir liaqat hussein's Aalim on line. It's high time we owned up to what we believe and do as a result, instead of searching for mysterious foreign hands...........we are our own downfall.
@Waqar: Waqar sahib.. another indian in disguise.... pathetic....
@Fatima: "An Ahmadi “worship place”? I think you mean “Ahmadi mosque.” Who’s responsible for this – the author or the editors? Because it really does take the wind out of our spineless sails, doesn’t it?"
Neither author nor the publication. Rather the culprit is Pakistani law. Since 1974 the Pakistani law states that Ahmadis are not Muslim and they cannot cal their 'worship places' as a mosque.
@john: "I think the author doesn’t understand the problem with Ahamdi’s and Qadiyanis. We “Muslims” have no problem living with them, but they should stop “pretending” to be Muslims, because they are not and they should also stop spreading this confusion among us. If they do that there should be no problem at all."
Not true. Consider the following facts: 1. Ahmadis were declared Wajib-ul-Qat on a TV show and 2 Ahmadis were killed right after that. 2. The DPC bullies in Rawalpindi threatened police that Ahmadis should nt be allowed to enter their worship center. The police quietly agreed because it did not dare to defy the Difai gang. 3. 23 Ahmadi students were expelled from a medical college in Punjab university just because they were Ahmadis. 4. Shezaan juice was banned by the Lahore bar council just because the owner is a n Ahmadi (he does not 'pretend' to be a Muslim.
absolutly right @Pakistani Hindu:
Sir Salute to you. I was reading the satellite town mob in BBC but I unable to find any comments and first time in Pakistani news I got your this article. Salute to you Sir again
@kaalchakra: "In Bangladesh, a Bengali Hindu lady called Banner ji Chatter ji Mookhar ji has proven that no-one was killed except by the terrorists of Mukti Bahini".
Her name is Shormila Bose. She did not say that the only people killed were by Mukti Bahini. She did say that the total number of people killed by Pak army was much smaller than what was claimed by the Mukti Bahini. Thus instead of 3 million Bengalis beig killed 'ONLY'; 200,000 Bengalis were killed by the Pak army. Since you do not even know the author's name, I think it is safe to say you haven't read what she wrote. I on the other hand, have read it.
@Babloo:
There are fewer Hindus in Pakistan than there were pre-partition but it's factually incorrect to say that they were once a clear majority in the provinces that became Pakistan.
Whilst I condemn unreservedly discrimination against minorities in Pakistan, India is not in a position to lecture Pakistan on this, given the demolition of the mosque at Ayodhya, the murders of Muslims in Gujarat and the mistreatment of civilians, "disappearances" and discovery of mass graves in Kashmir.
In each case Hindu prejudice in India was a contributing factor in these abuses of minorities. However, I do not believe Hinduism to be an "aggressive, intolerant creed". Instead I consider that the hate-filled extremists who clothed themselves in saffron in an attempt to sanctify their hatred are the same as their equally unpleasant extremist cousins in Pakistan who clothe their hatred in green.
We can build bridges between communities or burn them. We can find and respect the things we share in common, or we can seek out the differences. One way lies peace and unity. The other lies division and blood-soaked chaos.
No Divine religion in the world has ever taught injustice and brutality, even towards the wrong going and undesirable people in any society. Its only the inability and lack of understanding values of humanity by some individuals which turns into mob madness and in result such incidents take place. Moreover, in ongoing unreliable world any single society cannot be charged with the responsibility of such inhuman acts because there are numerous factors behind them in the shape of non state workers.
Great article. One can feel the pain of the author in his words.
This country has been so thankless to Ahmadis but what can you do in a society which has been fed a continuous diet of intolerance and bigotry.
@Bluejay:
It was sarcasm.
An Ahmadi "worship place"? I think you mean "Ahmadi mosque." Who's responsible for this - the author or the editors? Because it really does take the wind out of our spineless sails, doesn't it?
Good job Dr Hoodbhoy
Lets do some action, 1. Lets call for 21st amendment to the constitution to remove the Objective resolution 2 Lets call ourselves Pakistanis,....... only
......
sir once again great writing
Very well written article....This is really unfortunate that we have such cruel fanatics in Pakistan who cannot live peacefully with their fellow country men
Very well written indeed; In Pakistan one’s religious faith, or lack of one, has become sufficient to warrant execution and murder.
It looks like there is a contest for the so called 'purest muslim'. Since there can be only one 'purest muslim' ( whatever that non-sensical term may mean ) , all others must perish.
@kaalchakra:
Who is more likely to kill muslims?
Other Muslims.
@Yasser Latif Hamdani: . In the Thirteen Months, between Mr. Jinnah's 11th August 1947 Speech and the Sad Day in September 1948, period before he left for his Heavenly Abode the Pakistani Minorities Population Content had reduced to less than FIVE PERCENT. . Thus it seems that the Pakistani Muslims did not heed the Advice of Mr. Jinnah whilst he was still alive. . Today - It is another story!
@ Ahmee
i agree and i applaud your resilience.
@Faisal:
"I have studied with friends who are Ahmadis and still have them around as one of the well-settled people" ... that is fine. One wonders whether you have ever asked your Ahmadi friends about their experience of living in Pakistan ... if you do not want to rely on what the author has written the best source to verify his claims would be your friends. Also even if your friends have not had a direct negative impact on their careers, on account of their being Ahmadis, it doesn't mean that others who follow their faith are going through a similar life experience. You yourself say that its "true, incidents against minorities have been happening and are on the rise", then what exactly you do not agree with the author about?
you must be one of the liberal people of Pakistan....and persecution against Ahmadis has gained a lot of momentum in the last five years especially...believe me the times have changed...I am now afraid for my family's safety all the time....just last week there was a murder attempt on one of my very close relative...a couple of months back the gate of my house was painted with red paint and words "QATAL" and "KHOON" were written in big letters....we have our supporters as well no doubt but they are far and few...I am well settled as well....but the fright of going on day after day...knowing that the authorities are unable to protect people i love is heart wrenching
@Mehreen Killing of 88 Ahmadis, i would not term it persecution. It was a terrorist attack other communities/sects have faced it as well but the way government machinery reacted at the time is state persecution. A terrorist openly firing from minaret (check You tube) while police standing on the road with guns and media taking precious shots for news breaking. What a pity. I lost my Uncle and cousin there but still We love Pakistan. We understand Pakistan is under terrorism wave and we standby as defenders of our Motherland. But expelling students from institutes, Barring prayers, denouncing and declaring us liable to kill and above all state and constitutional patronage is what's called persecution.
May Pakistan Live Long, May Peace, Love, Humanity, Care, Respect prevails...May the country be ruled by true Islamic values as preached by Muhammad SAW PBUH...AMEN!!!
Hats off prof saab.. u r the sole voice for the sufferings of shias and ahmadis. May God bless u and keep u in protection!!Ameen!!!
@Atiya:
I think he is being sarcastic.
@Mehreen: sorry actually i was responding to someone else.. apologies..
@Zaid Hamid: Isn't that what the Nazi's said? Do you have a guarantied entrance into heaven? How do you know that you are the chosen ones? It's time to open your eyes and distinguish right from wrong! Not sure what's right? - just open the Holy Quran and see what Allah said! A righteous person is the one who does good and forbids evil...
For more information on Islam go to www.alislam.org
Thanks to the author for a brilliant article. May Allah help our nation to start living by the true teachings of Islam, instead of calling for Allah's wrath.
The blood line drawn in the name of religion needs fresh blood every now and then. That's what we have been doing, supplying fresh blood of Bengalis, Kashmiris, Ahmadis, Shias. Unfortunately, every new day brings the worst news for us. I wish to see a day when "Tolerance & Acceptance" would be part of our syllabus.
or maybe in your opinion it qualifies as "not being persecuted enough"
THANKS God bless you Hoodbhoy
@Andleeb... What a Judgement criteria, i am amazed by your conviction.
@Andleeb
A baseless article. If Ahmedias are indeed being persecuted, why are they not leaving for India in mass numbers? Why are they still living in Pakistan? This article is tarnishing the tolerant image of Islam.
Ditto for Kashmiris.
Thank you, Dr. Hoodbhoy, for being brave enough for all of us who think and feel as you do .......... you write with such clarity .......... Bless you!
@ Andleeb
I suppose killing of 88 Ahmedis in last year's terror attack on their mosque in Lahore qualifies as "not being persecuted".
@unbeliever
Sorry, i didn't really get what you are trying to say.
A baseless article. If Ahmedias are indeed being persecuted, why are they not leaving for India in mass numbers? Why are they still living in Pakistan? This article is tarnishing the tolerant image of Islam.
@ Nasir
I completely agree with your views.
great article.....we have become our own worst enemy.
great article....we have become our own worst enemy...
The new two nation theory concept is good... Im thinking of it very seriously. Thank you Dr. Sahb for putting light on realities and evil of extremisms :)
@Mehreen:
we are saying so because in our country we recognise ahmadiyyas as muslims and call there WORSHIP PLACES as MOSQUES. so we are acting in consonance with our law.
now don't say that it's a pakistani website so i must confirm to pakistani laws, it is world wide web, and i also am a member of this world, so as a citizen of this world i have all the rights to say what pleases me.
Running for life is never a good option-----you must resist and fight to preserve your life-----only our resolute effort and struggle against all those who threaten us can guarantee our self-preservation and life. So, I say don't run for life, but stay and fight to live.
If there is one country that does not need enemies, it is Pakistan.
Your last paragraph summs it up well. Great stuff.
Its high time we got out of the façade of "the brave Pakistani soldiers" and how they can do no wrong and how we cant survive unless we keep sponsoring their exorbitant spendings with our hard-earned money. They committed genocide in Bangladesh and they are doing the same in Baluchistan. They ruled Pakistan illegally for more than 40 years, destroyed our institutions, made a mockery of our constitution and but still politicians are the bad guys. It would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.
@kaalchakra:
Can you prove that pink pygmie elephants aren't behind the violence? You can't, but we can be reasonably sure that the people who call others wajb ul qatl might actually do some killing.
@kaalchakra seriously get educated.
@ John btw who are you to decide whether Ahmadis are muslims or not. are you a scholar? have you done in-depth study of Islam and Ahmadi teachings both? do you think you are competent enough to judge another person's faith? worry about your faith, let Allah be the judge of whether Ahmadis are Muslim or not, because you will be held accountable for your actions and faith not on theirs.
@kaalchakra: Are you doing anything or not. Good things are being done by China and bad things by USA, Israel and India. What are you doing. Twiddling thumbs?
@john: who are you to term anyone muslim or non-muslim. Quran and our last prophet explicitly stated that dont term anyone as kufaar. that my friend is not your place and neither it is the place of our any so called self proclaimed people proclaimed ULEMA... sorry to say but these guys are completely fake...
@Ali Tanoli: You have not sacrificed yourself for the so called religion?
@Shahbaz Asif Tahir: But is anybody who was killed innocent? Apparently no as per your logic.
@Sohaib: With such barbarism, Pak should not stay.
An excellent article by a man who has a conscience and the will to tell the truth about the ills of our society which will be destoyed if no heed is paid to such wake up calls
Sajid, for anybody believing in a rational religion, that poses no challenge. Of course, no tea pot is circling around the sun. Else the most Beneficiant God would have informed His tea-loving followers about it. Proof beyond any doubt that such a teapot either does not exist or is part of israr-e-illahi (like the jinns whose existence cannot be doubted even though modern science has not yet been able to harness their power for electricity generation or transportation).
@NA: This may be due to officially sactioned censorship!
Run Professor Sb. .... As fast as u can. That is the best u can do - Right ? So ... Run !!!
Very sad indeed! i wish these good for nothing organisations promoting hatered and killing amongst different sects would get together in the namef of Islam to do something which actually is the true meaning of Islam: to help the humanity at large, there are people in their country who are sleeping without food everyday, if they have to kill somebody, kill the drug dealers, kill the people making fake medicines, kill the people who burn womens faces with acid...........
@Ahmadi & (Pakistani?):
I do remember the expulsion of those students for alleged preaching, but the mere fact that 23 students of a minority sect were present in that medical college clearly indicates the ahmedis are able to get decent education. Now if I remember correctly they were eventually reinstated in same and other institutes, some even getting into higher merit colleges after that incident was highlighted, even though I strongly denounce that incident but I believe that to be an isolated one and not an general trend.
Congratulations to Prof. Hoodbhoy for highlighting the dire plight of religious minorities.
I would just offer one correction on his statement "The title of this essay deliberately excludes Hindus, Christians, and Parsis. The reason: these communities were never enthused about India’s partition (even though some individual members pretended to be)."
While I am not sure about Parsis, the Christians were indeed very strong and vocal supporters for the creation of Pakistan.
@kaalchakra:
Muslims love Muslims? Is that why the murderer Quadri killed taseer? Another Muslim. TTP kills other Muslims as a matter of routine. What Muslim love is that? Please don't come up with stupid arguments.
These extra-judicial killings are happening only because of one reason, “we have left reading Qur’an,”
I think the reason is just OPPOSITE to this
The author has done full justice in bringing out the hard facts about the immense suffering borne by the two communities in Pakistan. What is most disturbing is that the two most important institutions ie civilian govt and the military are turning a blind eye and one of them is even encouraging these killings which sans any logic. Infact these sectarian killers are more dangerous than TTP who are bent upon destroying the whole social fabric of the country. What can be the solution when the state machinery who are duty bound to provide protection to all its citizen fail to do so ? The only way I see for all minorities to safe guard their lives and properties is to arm themselves and fight these sectarian killers.
Killings of Shias is not a new phenomenon. Historically, the absence of tolerance among Muslims is the main reason for it. When they engage themselves in a religious debate they consider their beliefs right and others wrong even though they don't have an any logic or reason behind their arguments. Resultantly, they start to abuse each other. Actually, religious schools and institutions misguide students about the beliefs of other sects. No sunni scholar will allow his students to read Nehj Ul Balagha or any other book written by Shia author. On the other side, Shia books are filled with the references of sunni books. Shias are not allowed to offer prayers in a sunni mosque and vice versa. And interestingly, state is confused about its ideology. How can one live in such a society?
We surely have a very bleak future!
@Mj: Excellent facts.
@FaeXan.K: Allama Iqbal College expelled all Ahmadi students at once you need more detailed look on facts.
I'm a Shia and my whole family is still in Pakistan. Time to look for immigration papers I guess.
@kalakachra
OKay, shame on me for what? For exposing the foolish line of logic that you used? Only stupid people, or very religious (whatever, same thing) demand to prove something in the negative, and I have doubts that you fall in at least one of those two groups.
Here is a challenge: Prove to me there is NOT a tea pot circling around the sun. You can never prove it, however you can come up with another absurd response and pretend you proved it.
@Zaid Hamid: That is why a Pakistani is killing another Pakistan, no one else need to destroy Pakistan but Pakistanies themselves.
@Bhindian: The people who can not follow Quran will say such article absurd. This article is brilliant.
Excellent article. Just want to point out one thing- Jinnah never thought Hindus and Muslims could not live together. What he wanted was a consociationalist compromise. His Pakistan did not necessarily mean a vivisection of India. This is precisely why he appointed a Hindu as Pakistan's first law minister. Other than that I completely agree with this article.
The radicalisation of society is a natural outcome of divisive 'Two Nation Theory', which requires an object of hate. Yesterday it was the religious minorities, today it is the sectarian minorities, tomorrow it will be sub-sectarian minorities- Deobandis targeting Barelvis. The cancer will spread as long as Pakistan does not dissociate itself from 'Two Nation Theory'
@Salman: I strongly object to the point that the shia attacks are a post 9/11 reaction. No that is not the case, Shia blood has been spilled in this land of the pure long before that.
Sick society dangerously obsessed with religion. We need more space to breathe!
I feel deeply ashamed at the current state of affairs. It is not the fault of anybody but us, nobody but me. We're all complicit in this nation-sponsored, indirect ethnic cleansing. What a despicable society we have become.
your views, thoughts reflects anti Pakistan ideology...... very absurd....
kc is messing around.
@Tayyab: Remember Punjab medical college's expulsion of 23 Ahmadis a few years earlier based on their belief in Ahmadiyyat?
You start any topic in Pakistan about Pakistan's ills. Pak bloggers always tend to reason out that it is all CIA/RAW/MOSSAD's fault esp after WOT was started. One does not know whether to pity them or blame them for their ignorance or admonish them for their denialism. One thing appears to be certain. They must have been indoctrinated by somebody, may be their govt, may be their army, may be their curriculam. But what should the minorities, who do not agree with these blamegames Hang on, the author has mentioned a way out "run-for-your-life". Esp to the pakistani minorities.
I think the author doesn't understand the problem with Ahamdi's and Qadiyanis. We "Muslims" have no problem living with them, but they should stop "pretending" to be Muslims, because they are not and they should also stop spreading this confusion among us. If they do that there should be no problem at all.
Great Article. Welldone Dr Hood Bhai to write for the rights of deprived masses in Pakistan.
Great article. One more voice . But there is no one to hear this
@Zaid Hamid: Wow. Such killing of innocent people you call yourself best. I am very confused on this. Is this best you say astaghfurrallh.
Bravo Sir. It is geat article. You told the truth and every friend of humanity must appreciate it.
Read this detail too about the killings of Shias
http://www.dardistantimes.com/content/kohistan-carnage-first-mishap-between67-now-and3-later-editorial2
@Zaid Hamid---I wish it were a "Yahoodi conspiracy"as you say,but unfortunately it is not.All this mess is of our own making and we are paying a very heavy price for our not accepting the wrong we are doing to ourselves by putting blame on such factors which have nothing to do with what is happening in our social degradation.btw.what happened to the "tolerance" that Islam teaches us?,and "Iqra" to learn and to know through exploration for truth and knowledge.Islam as I know,says nowhere that "blame others and be foolishly happy"
Hopeless situation. The security establishment has done immense damage to the country through it's shortsighted policies. We are heading for catastrophic disaster.
Great article. Every day killing has desensitized this nation to feel any pain or remorse for this injustice. Our priorities have been changed. It looks like that every one is in a rat race. Rch is to become super rich, poor to to worry about his next meal and an extremist for his next prey. We talk about Islamis society but with what kind of Islam? They feel megalomania in this country, think about their sate if they were still living in United India.
sajid
"No one can prove something in the negative"
That is the same lame excuse that dishonest unbelievers throw around when they are asked to prove their allegations. Shame on you for even mentioning it here, particularly if you call yourselves a Muslim!
Inshallaha, Pakistsan will solve its problems without needing help from such people.
@FaeXan.K: You studied with several ahmadi students huh, so did you ever intervene when they were hounded by the Islami Jamiat Tulaba/Jamaat Islami hooligans on campus premises?, did you ever ask them if the constant harassment they were subjected to is having an effect on their studies? Also the lucky ones who do get to colleges in Pakistan fear for their lives and their enrollment as well. And from memory I can tell you that in Faisalabad Medical College, 23 Ahmadi students were expelled- reason = they were ahmadis. Apart from this, just look it up on the internet and you will find out how the student 'tanzeems' of so called Islami parties maim and hound ahmadi students.
Mj, vow! You really distort history! But your falsehood are easy to destroy. Just one example. In Bangladesh, a Bengali Hindu lady called Banner ji Chatter ji Mookhar ji has proven that no-one was killed except by the terrorists of Mukti Bahini. After extensive research and feldwork, she found that only two people were killed, and those too by mistake, in crossfire between Mukti Bahini hordes attacking innocent civilians and brave Pakistani soldiers trying to defend the latter at considerable risk to their own lives.
So your data is just not valid because it is heavily biased.
@Cynical: Thank you. I do not want my children or grandchildren who will one day go through my collections and my notes to think that I was a selfish rascal who turned a blind eye and did not speak up when I saw evil, an act which even a blind can perceive.
If I wake up a single soul who sit in their high castles of PAK, I think I lived my life with purpose. I can feel the pain of the author in this writing. My thoughts and writings will still be the same had that child been of another religion.
There was something cruel about that incidence that it changed my heart forever.
Read this as someone who has not ever visited Pakistan and only have an image of Pakistan that you got from the recent media in the west:
"...Forbidden from calling themselves Muslims, Ahmadi children are expelled from school once their religion is discovered. Just a hint may be enough to destroy a career...."
Does the picture that emerge from it look close to what is happening in reality? I have studied with friends who are Ahmadis and still have them around as one of the well-settled people. True, incidents against minorities have been happening and are on the rise, but when a scholarly person makes this type of a narration, I am inclined to take things coming from him with a grain of salt.
I found the following interesting similarities: "On April 1, 1933, the Nazi boycott of Jewish businesses was observed throughout Germany." (Compares with the recent boycott of Shezan Juice in Lahore) "Jews with first names of non-Jewish origin had to add "Israel" (males) or "Sara" (females) to their names, and a large letter "J" was to be printed on their passports" (Pakistani passports already bear that discrimination).
Pakistan is gravitating towards a black hole of Taliban Raj as it was in Afghanistan.
@Zaid Hamid:
The minorities are being ill treated in Pakistan. Why are you purposely ignoring this fact and calling it Zionist conspiracy ?Just because you are being paid by Agencies ?Pl stop this nonsence.
Its a matters of faith mr hoodhbhai.
This is a slow spreading cancer. It will take decades but it will engulf our whole society. We are going to die a slow death.
@kaalchakra: Keep on thinking that. At least you'll eventually wipe yourselves out quicker with your backs turned to the actual threats.
As things get ugly, it's become virtually impossible to defend the concept of Pakistan. Born out of paranoid prejudiced distrust of a Hindu majority or hegemony, the Ahmadis and Shias should have considered the age old sectarian ramifications with a Sunni majority. They failed to stand up for non-Muslim minorities in 1949 and each other in 1974 and have fallen since. Now the last line of defence are the diminishing moderate and few liberal Sunnis from the majority, who must have realized how small in number and in danger they were since Taseer's assassination. Unless they can stand up and undo the Sunnification of the 80's and the on-going Wahhabification or Deobandization of Pak, and they could all agree to undo the discriminatory laws since '49, there's not much hope left for minorities.
Incredible. Did not know that. Unfortunately you'll find some Malik Ishaq defenders and outright supporters even on these forums.
Last week, someone burned down a Muslim Funeral home/mosque, under construction here in Las Vegas. The authorities and government machinery went into motion to investigate. No lives were lost. No one was hurt. We were allowed to protest. The press and media covered it. Every one knows of an undercurrent of discrimination, but rarely does it raise it's ugly face in public. Unfortunately, the situation in Pakistan is exactly the opposite - minorities are persecuted regularly and people take it in stride. The incidents mentioned here are harrowing - the kind of experiences we read about in historical accounts of persecution by other "uncivilized" nations and peoples. It seems like we have become the oppressors and don't possess the insight to see where we are heading.
And Imran Khan, i.e. Taliban Khan, had the nerve to ask what's so wrong with D-e-P.
Unfortunately standing with them were establishmentarians who wielded power at the top that included Munawar Hasan of Jamat-i-Islami, PTI's Ijaz Chaudry, Ejaz-ul-Haq, Hamid Gul, Sheikh Rashid, etc. When those in politics and the army share the same ideologies, there's not much to say.
@kaalchakra: You can continue living in the irrational twisted unfounded dogmatic xenophobic denial to ease your cognitive bias of CIA/RAW/Mossad/Djinns/Martians or finally accept facts honestly and wake up to reality. Muslims can be bigoted Zalims and Munafiqs and their own worst enemies, especially within Pakistan.
Great article! The best from you, Pervez! Hats-off!!!
@kalakachra:
Bala, don’t be unfair. Can you prove beyond any doubt that the enemies of Islam – USA, Israel, and India, are not behind this mischief? You can’t because they really are
No one can prove something in the negative. For instance, you can't prove that aliens are NOT behind the building of pyramids. You can't prove that there is NOT a teapot orbiting around the sun. You can't because it is not possible to prove the negative. But, whoever claims that pyramids were built by aliens HAS to prove his claim. Whoever claims that there is a teapot orbiting around the sun, HAS to prove his claim.
Here is the golden rule: The burden to prove lies with the one who makes the claim.
So if you make the claim that USA, Israel, and India are behind all this, it is now your responsibility to prove it. You can't just make an absurd claim and then demand of people to disprove that claim and assume you have put forth a powerful argument, when you do that, you have put forth an illogical argument. A stupid one.
@kaalchakra: "Who is more likely to kill Muslims?"
Muslims themselves.
Indonesian Anti-communist purges ~500,000 killed (1960s) Bangladesh genocide ~200,000 killed (1970s) AlAnfal Campaign Kurdish genocide ~170,000 (Late 1980s) Algerian Civil War ~ 150,000 (1990s) Iran-Iraq War ~900,000 killed (1980s) Darfur Genocide ~400,000 killed (Early 2000s) Iraq Civil War ~ 250,000 killed (Mid-2000s) Syrian Uprising ~ 7,000 killed (2011 onwards) Terrorist attacks from 2001 onwards ~ 80,000+ killed, mostly muslims.
Some of the facts from Mr. Hoodbhoy's articles seem very very distorted. I will comment fully on the whole article once i have enough time on my hands.
"Knowing this, the school staff at a high school in Mansehra added the word ‘Qadiani’ to the name of an Ahmadi student, Raheel Ahmad, effectively eliminating the boy’s chances of getting a university education. "
I have studied with quite a few Qadiani and Ahmadi at one of the premier Institutes of Engineering in Pakistan, and have quite a few friends in various other institutions across the country. I just want to correct Mr. Hoodbhoy where he says that having a Qadiani name eliminates a student's chances of getting a University education. Research on facts first please. If in Mansehra the student cannot get University education, he can surely get a good education from any other part of Pakistan. I do not know of any good University in Pakistan does not allow Qadiani or Ahmedi students to get enrolled!!!
We should make this man President.
A country founded on the basis of intolerant ideology is bound to be consumed by it's ideology. Denials, rallies, or the valor of the Army are useless when chickens come home to roost.
the Pakistani public is complicit in this bigotry just as the Germans were complicit in the mass killing of Jews.
Unfortunately the article reflects a correct image of what is happening inside Pakistan but Islam does not teach any of these barbaric acts. Islam is a Peaceful religion with space for all other religions. What is being done by these fanatics is totally against the teachings in Islam, because Islam teaches to respect humanity and protect it. These fanatics are driven by wrong/false teachings given by the Anti-Islamic agencies such as CIA (American Intelligence), Mossad (Israeli Intelligence) and RAW (Indian Intelligence) to attack not only the religious minorities in Pakistan but also the innocent citizens of Pakistan and Armed forces. So to blame Islam is completely wrong and unacceptable.
And Qadianis are not Muslim and they dont follow Islam at all.
It is an unfortunate fact that extremism has increased since the start of American colonialism; it is an inconvenient fact that extremism has been acerbated by the American Wars, starting in 2001. The city of Bethlehem after 1500 years of Muslim rule was still a Christian majority city, until the Zionist takeover of the lands of Palestine; and now Christians constitute only a minority population. Before the American Invasion of Iraq, Christians constituted 8% of the Iraqi population. Today less than 4% of the Iraqi populations are Christians. Sunnis have also been displaced. Afghania was a tolerant place before the Soviet and American invasions. Sikhs who settled in Aghania at the time of Sikh rule were a prosperous community; there was no knife-edge hostility between Shia and Sunni.
Paki involvement with American interventions in Afghania has acerbated and energised extremism in Pakia. Dictator Zia aligned Pakia with American purpose and Saudi treasure to fight the Soviet occupation of Afghania. With encouragement and participation of America and Saudia, Pakia was turned into a pro-Jihadi society. And the Saudi evil of Sunni-Shia differentiation was interjected into the Paki culture. At one time a Division of Paki Army was based in Saudi Arabia, and the Saudis dictated to Pakia that no Shia solders were to be stationed there. Regarding documenting religion on Identity Cards and Passports, it is high time Pakistan gave up such medieval practices. Swiss Passports do not even give the place of birth, though American ones do. In the twenty-first century it is a sign of National Lack of Confidence or Paranoia or Venality, to carry your religion on the palm of your hand.Pakia must start a mandatory life imprisonment, or capital punishment, for physical or verbal aggression against minorities.
There is so much to admire about Hoodobhoy but when such knowledgeable writers present doom tales, it does not give full justice to issues he is raising. There is NO restriction anywhere is rules which prevents Ahmedi students from getting education and making careers. I studied with Ahmedi students in my university which is an public engineering university and most of them are on their way to decent careers. Most of the decent organisations DO NOT discriminate on religion if they even ask about it, in fact minorities are encouraged.
I know this is not the same for general public or organizations but to say that their careers are finished once they are discovered as Ahmedis in schools is plain wrong. Maybe the law declaring Ahmedis is not correct but to blame someone for implementing it is not the best way to go, in a democratic society favored by most of the commentators, target should be the law and not its implementation. Also Hoodobhoy has conveniently ignored the sectarian violence of 90's and reasons behind that, current wave of sectarian violence is only an offshoot of that at more troubled spots in pakistan albeit in more force.
Dr. Hoodbhoy - I agree completely with your article - but why do you refer to Ahmadi mosques as 'worship places' and not as mosques?
@John B Following your comments on many diff posts covering diverge issues I have learned to respect your opinion, because I found them a product of a cultured and educated mind. But at times I also wonder,Whether you really reach your target audience. I honestly hope and pray that you do. Take for example, your post on this page. How many of the readers (let alone Pakistanis) will be able to sniff the obnoxious smell coming out of the 'exhumed corpse of that ill fated christian child'? This country is past the state of delusion, has entered into a collective amnesia. It doesn't matter whether you are a Pakistani or not.But your contributions in promotion of an intelligent discussion on contemporary issues of importance is a commendable endeavour.
Bala, don't be unfair. Can you prove beyond any doubt that the enemies of Islam - USA, Israel, and India, are not behind this mischief? You can't because they really are. If you don't get that, just be rational. Enemies of Islam hate Muslims. Muslims love Muslims. Who is more likely to kill Muslims?
@Bhindian: WHY absurd?? A very well articulated article people should stop supporting religious leaders who exploit religion to fan hatred across the country
Its sad and depressing. Hindus have already being driven to extinction in the land where they were once a clear majority. An aggressive, intolerant creed will wipe out remaining traces of minorities , the writing is on the wall.
These extra-judicial killings are happening only because of one reason, "we have left reading Qur'an," rather started keeping it in beautiful covers inside cupboard. Humanity was always ahead of religion and everybody can confirm this with the revelation of Qur'an. Furthermore, Islam doesn't allow killing of any person just for religion so mixing Islam with these sorts of killing in Pakistan must not be related. However, just for correction Qadianis must not be mixed with Muslims and those who claimed them to be so, they need to read 12 claims of their leader (Mirza Qadiani) in his books each contradicting his prior claim.
@ Pakistani hindu
The problem is that pakistani muslims think the muslims are always rights and their religion and lifestyle is superior to other religions and lifestyles! so how can u expect them to considers us as human beings? If Islam doesn't know humanity, how can u expect us to live in freedom?
@salman
You are a genius, a coward, go on... surely you will always find an excuse. The tea was bad hence jihadis killed shias. After war of terror is over, you will say Jihadis have no work, no americans to fight, hence they kill shias.
Concerns are right but attacks on shias, minorities have only escalated in the last few years only (post 9-11 era). I strongly believe that the root cause of all this mess is on going War on Terror which is being fought inside borders as well. You cannot change the mindset of people to develop tolerance for some one whom don't believe like the way you do, it may take generations but to keep in check, you need to get over with this so called war on terror. These jihadis are getting right sort of ingredients to grow and when they can't strike US forces in Afghanistan, they go after our forces or target the minorities.
@Sonia Wahab: Well said ! We forget humans came first and then created religion. It was not the other way round. We as humans we can survive without religion, but religion cannot survive even for a second once human race is gone.
So it is important for all religious people to understand that religion can NEVER be more important than a human life.
Misguided religious fanatics should be brought to justice. Those who kill fellow humans desrve no mercy. Pakistan has come to stay. These bigots will soon vanish
They day we realize human life is the most important thing than religion, race, ethnicity and history, only then there is a chance that human race will survive. I am very pessimist about humanity in Muslims regions.
Last year read a story in ET wherein a father was asked to exhume his 10 year old child, after nearly a year, from a Muslim grave (Shia or Sunni , don't know) in Rawalpindi and rebury her (rotten corpse) in a different grave because she was a Christian.
No one ever bothered the inhumane treatment, mindset, and the agony of the father who was subjected to this intolerable barbaric act.
If a dead child's rotten corpse was not given a basic human decency of thought and action, who in Pakistan will care for the living who are drunk in frenzy of bigotry?
Thank You Sir. Thanks Indeed. These bigots will never stop at any point..
Ahmadi and Shias can actually use the two nation theory to safeguard their own rights within Pakistan now.
They strived and created Pakistan together, they can certainly create another country in the same manner.
Its just a matter of time with the way things are going.
Cursed are the people who prevent others from the worship of Allah. Run from the land of "Alhumdolillah, we are Muslims." That is what the Holy Prophet SAW did when life became unbearable at the hands of Abu Labhs and Abu Jahls.
@Zaid Hamid: :-). You rock as always.
Yet another thought provoking article on a subject of pivotal importance. Bravo sir. I agree entirely with what you have said.
What to talk of dead Ahmedi, even dead, converted Ahmedi into a Muslim are not spared. Seen that first hand. Utterly shameful.
And thank you Dr Hoodbhoy once again for writing this point balnk without mincing wordssss.
Is there any hope left? When you talk to ordinary people, your relatives, and friends, a bitter realization is sure to hit you that no one really cares what happens to minorities. It is hard to argue against such hatred which has been fostered over decades through newspapers, textbooks, television and friday sermons. Pogroms and massacres don't start overnight. It takes years and years of propaganda to instill so much hated against the other, to dehumanize them to the point that their lives essentially come to be considered worthless. So I ask again, is there any hope left, or are we trying to prop up a sinking ship?
Absurd article
Why is religion more important to Pakistanis than human life?? WHY??? No religion is higher than the Truth and the truth is we all are the same part of one human family.
