LAHORE:

A two-member Supreme Court bench on Wednesday sought the personal appearance of suspended Red Crescent Society of Pakistan (RCSP) chairman Zahid Bashir for February 27.

Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jilani and Justice Mian Saqib Nisar issued this order in a suo motu hearing into charges of embezzlement and misuse of power against Bashir. RCSP Secretary Brig (r) Muhammad Saleem and Dr Shaukat, vice principal of the Red Crescent Medical College, appeared before the court on Wednesday and stated that an inquiry by the Lahore sessions judge had found Bashir guilty.

The secretary accused Governor Sardar Latif Khan Khosa of misusing his powers and meddling in the affairs of the RSCP. He said the governor had replaced former RCSP chairman Mian Muhammad Hanif with Bashir “to plunder the funds of the society”. He said they were using the society’s funds for other purposes and evidence of this had been presented to the inquiry judge.

The petitioner said that the Lahore High Court had also barred Bashir from working as chairman.
