Pakistan have come under heavy fire from former players over their team selection, which they feel was the major reason behind the drubbing handed out by England in the One-Day International (ODI) series in the UAE.
Former Test cricketer and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed believed that besides the poor on-field show by the players, flawed selection led to the heavy defeats in the ODIs after Pakistan had dominated the Test series.
“The selection was very poor,” Salahuddin told The Express Tribune. “The inclusion of all-rounder Shoaib Malik after the team had already been announced disturbed the side’s balance. The selection committee’s decision to overlook Malik was overruled by the captain, which is a proof of player power. The decision disrupted the team’s rhythm and it should have been avoided.”
Salahuddin also criticised Pakistan’s fielding during the series terming it ‘pathetic’. The former chief selector felt that separate teams for all formats should be the way forward for the national team as players like Misbahul Haq, Younus Khan and Azhar Ali were slow starters and pegged the team back in limited-overs matches.
Salahuddin was also critical of Misbah’s captaincy, calling him a defensive leader.
“Shahid Afridi is still the best choice to lead in ODIs and Twenty20s because he is an aggressive player.”
Akhtar unhappy with selection as well
Meanwhile, former fast-bowler Shoaib Akhtar also raised questions over the selection during the series.
“Pakistan need to review their selection in ODIs and Twenty20s,” he said before adding that players like Malik cannot hold their place in the team anymore.
Akhtar was dismayed at the way Pakistan’s pace attack struggled during the series, taking only three wickets compared to that of England’s, which snared 27 scalps. He also disparaged the batting line-up’s approach, which he felt lacked aggression.
‘Pakistan need to work on their bowling’
Legendary former captain Imran Khan believed that the hosts’ weak bowling cost them the series.
“Pakistan need to work on their bowling department,” the former captain told reporters in Dubai. “England bounced back after the Test series defeat due to their strong bowling performance.”
However, Imran backed Misbah to stay on as captain.
“Misbah needs to show more aggression but it is too early to write him off,” he said. “However, he must bat up the order to get good totals. If one captain is doing well in all three forms of the game then there is no use having separate captains.”
Captaincy criteria flawed: Waqar
Meanwhile, former coach Waqar Younis has questioned the criteria for selecting the captain.
“Since the last two decades Pakistan has been selecting the captain on the basis of his performance,” he said. “This is not an ideal approach because the knowledge and insight of the game that a player has should also be considered apart from performance.”
‘Team missed spirit’
An official close to the team management said the players lacked spirit during the ODI series, which he believed was the main cause of defeat.
“There was a sudden change in the players’ body language,” he said. “The spirit which was there in the Test series was missing during the ODIs. The players were not as motivated as before, which was the reason behind the decline in performance.”

What about Rameez Jr and Muhammad Talha aren't they fit??
The selection has been really poor. The incumbent chief selector Mohammad Ilyas has damaged Pakistan cricket just for making sure that his son-in-law Imran Farhat is in the squad in all the three formats for doing nothing. He is killing the talent. Fawad Alam and Ahmed Shehzad have already become his victims. WIth the results Imran Farhat is delivering, his father-in-law certainly is one shameless persons.
average player average performance
Pakistan approached ODIs with same mindset as tests.poor selection in the shape of shoaib, farhat, akmal brothers, younis etc.another reason was that Pakistan missed a professional coach. I well come the decision of PCB on Dave watmore.pakistan seriously need to look into ODI format of the game.we need some solid batsmen not seldom performers like younis, akmal, farhat. I think we miss the batsmen of the class of inzimam and yousaf.good luck Pakistan cricket.
I'm loving the title!
"Poor selection led to ODI defeats: Former chief selector"
As though the defeats caused him to become a "former" selector :)
The Real problem is that we are going away from Heritage, Our Lead bowler should be a Fast Bowler not Saeed Ajmal, this is our legacy, 5 Spinners in one match is a rare Pakistan team selection, we've never fielded so many spinners, just two are enough every time. we ain't Bangladesh or Srilanka. Second Misbah saftey First approach cost that match and its changing teams agression and mind set. Remember we always need to play at our strengths. Agression is our strength. Cricket has changed since 96 so Misbah guy Please move on!!
Talented top performers of domestic circuit were completely overlooked for favored Malik and Farhat. We should accept our mistake of killing merit. Remeber Fawad Alam played two valuable innings in UAE against South Africa but removed by Imran Farhat's Father in Law. I think by killing top performers like Shahzeb, Sami, Khalil, Sadaf Hussain, Yasir Shah and alike, we cannot expect good results.
The major problem oftentimes we had seen in past and now here in daubi that how can treat the Seamers specially when they got help from wicket, short pitches deliveries, as well as rising :swing and swung etc: For this aspect necessary strong the batting techniques which requires some hardwork and also correct selection of openors upto number five.Bad luck here the base of selection is not compete the original standard instead liking and dis-liking ,not mentioning players performance in local tournaments ,trophy matches etc:Many out standing players had we lost from poor selection procedure.here I saw a wicketkeeper batsman's of Islamabad,Mohammad Shahbaz, who have naturual talent against specially the fast bowling, Cut ,Pul,Hook, shots, masterly playing and uptill now fit, but not have any backing ,untill in waiting list,so , how many are more in waiting list. The need of honest and correct selection until we can't cover the problem.
i agree with imran khan, but we need to get rid of few people like shoaib, imran farahat. Also the lights of umer akmal need a serious telling off he throw his wicket in every match by playing stupid shots. He is hasn't got the potential that he promised in his early days to stay and play a long innings.
Misbah speaks near perfect english and his highly articulate with the press. Also his track record as captain is great. Shohib is not the issue its adnan akmal who cannot bat. We need a wicketkeeper that can
