Foul play: Woman poisons husband with nephew’s help

Says husband’s nephew had promised to marry her, but went back on the promise.

BAHAWALPUR:

A woman and her nephew were arrested on Tuesday for killing her husband after she confessed to the crime.

Sadar police officials said Lubana Chowk resident Nazia had told them that she killed her husband, Mukhtar Ahmad, with help from his nephew, Irfan. She told the police that they had poisoned him in his food at his house on February 12.  She said, Irfan had promised to marry her once Ahmad was killed.

But after Ahmad was killed, she told police, Irfan backed out on his commitment and refused to marry her. She said he told her that he had married his fiancé and that she should forget about him.

After her confession, police raided Irfan’s house and arrested him, who they said also confessed to the crime.

According to the details, Ahmed had married Nazia 10 years ago and they had five children. Nazia said that she later developed a relationship with Irfan, Ahmad’s elder brother’s son. Last Sunday, Irfan went to their house and helped Nazia poison Ahmad. Soon after dinner, he left, she had told the police.

When Ahmad’s condition deteriorated in a few hours and he fainted from poisoning, Nazia started shouting for help, telling neighbours who came to the rescue that her husband had suffered a heart attack. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said the family then refused a post mortem examination.

Nazia told police that soon after Ahmad’s burial, she called Irfan, who did not answer her calls. She said he started ignoring her and later told her not to call or visit him.

On Tuesday morning, she said, Irfan told her that he had married his fiancé. She said after he “betrayed” her, she could not see him live happily.

She said one of Irfan’s friends, Amir, had helped them obtain the poison.  She said Irfan had promised to give him Rs10,000.

Investigation officer Abdul Majeed told The Express Tribune that the FIR was registered by Irfan’s father Abdul Hameed.

Hameed told The Express Tribune that his son had greatly embarrassed him.

“I will never forgive him,” he said. Hameed also said he would look after Ahmad’s children, who he said, were his responsibility now.
