Kidnappers get life term

Maid, three accomplices ordered to pay Rs200,000 fine.

KARACHI: Two men and two women who kidnapped a two-year-old girl for ransom were sentenced to life imprisonment by an anti- terrorism court here on Wednesday.

Judge Ghulam Mustafa Memon of ATC III fined Samreen, Yasmeen, Sohail and Javaid Rs200,000 each and also ordered the confiscation of all their immoveable properties.

According to the prosecution, Samreen, who worked as a maid, planned the kidnapping. On November 24, 2008, after completing her day’s work she took the baby out on the pretext of getting some sweets for her. Sohail and Javaid, who were waiting outside in a car, drove the baby away and took her to Yasmeen’s house.

The group demanded Rs20 million for the baby’s release and later settled for Rs2 million. They released the baby after a week of captivity.

After their arrest the women confessed to their crime while  the men were identified by the prosecution witnesses, leading to their conviction and sentence after trial.

Extortion

Another anti-terrorism court (ATC II), headed by Judge Khalida Yaseen, sentenced an extortionist to a term of five years. According to the prosecution, Abdul Rahman went to a garment shop in the remits of Kalri police station and demanded Rs30,000 as protection money. He was arrested red-handed by the police and sent for trial.
