The police on Thursday arrested the suspected leader of a gang of land grabbers while he was supervising illegal construction on a portion of land owned by Karakoram International University (KIU).
“The man was arrested red-handed and we believe his gang could be behind various other illegal occupations,” said a police official who wished not to be named.
“Most of the university’s land is scattered and unprotected and taking advantage of the situation, the gang had started constructing boundary walls on the land,” said an official at the KIU.
He called for taking immediate action against the gang, adding that any delay would strengthen their claim on the land and take the matter to court.
In order to verify the ownership of the land, the administration also called in officials from the revenue department.
In addition to that, government high-ups and army officers have also been informed keeping in view the sensitivity of the case.
Earlier, a clash between the police and locals at the university had left one person dead and two police officials injured.
The clash erupted when the police attempted to vacate the land belonging to the university.
