Pakistan experienced mixed fortunes on the opening day of their Davis Cup tie against Lebanon with the scores tied at 1-1 after Aisamul Haq Qureshi's win and Aqeel Khan's loss.
Aisam gave Pakistan a winning start in the delayed the Asia/Oceania group II tie – the scheduled opening day was washed out – as he edged out Karim Alayli 6-0, 6-3, 6-4. However, the hosts hit back as Bassam Beidas outplayed Aqeel 6-1,6-3, 6-2 to leave the tie balanced ahead of the doubles match that takes place today.
According to the coach and non-playing captain Rashid Malik, Pakistan was confident about taking a lead by winning the doubles match today.
"We're confident about the doubles match, it has been our high point in all previous Davis Cup ties," Malik told The Express Tribune. "Aqeel's defeat doesn't worry me. But our doubles matches may well decide our fate against Lebanon."
According to Malik, Aisam and Aqeel will be used throughout the tie – including the reverse singles that follow the doubles – while Yasir Khan and Mohammad Abid will stay as reserve players for now.
