Two senior security officials revealed the news on condition of anonymity, but did not provide further details.
Brigadier Khan had opted to be tried by court martial after an inquiry board informed him that the allegations leveled against him had been substantiated. He had asked the concerned officials to prove the allegations against him before the court.
The brigadier was charged for his alleged ties to extremist organisations, including the banned UK-based organisation HuT. A day later, four army majors were also arrested for their alleged links with HuT.

Pakistan army is the institution which require a lot much accountability. A huge type of corruption and nepotism is prevailed. Lower rank is not considered even human being. there are lot much thought.
The troubled future is ahead . Good luck Pakistan . The new generation have to come forward and army have to help them .
Firstly, the Pak army and political leadership has failed to defend the sovereignty of Pakistan and has turned itself into a mercenary outfit fighting America's war in return for payment (Kerry-Luger bill). The leadership has failed the people of Pakistan economically by creating a culture of debt and dependency upon external aid in order to hold back development of the nation and provide the opportunity for India to dominate the region. The Bangladeshi government has instigated similar policies. This is part of America's plan for the region to create a strong Indian state to counter the regional expansion of China's influence.
Therefore, HuT is right to call upon sincere Muslims in the army and across the country to remove the current civilian and military regime and replace it with a leadership that will work for the interest of Islam and the Muslim ummah. HuT are the only party in Pakistan that has an agenda for independence from western nations and progress for the nation. Sincere Pakistani's need to work with HuT and bring about he needed change and take a leaf out of the Muslims of Egypt, Tunisia and Syria who are moving towards Islam.
@Basharat: Islam doesn't believe in nations or boundaries, which is why all Muslims must support Islamic Ummah. Nations keep divide & all Islamic nations must form one Islamic Nation!
I may not be able to quote the relevant verse here, but you must read the holy Quran again!
Akhtar ! is it written in Holy Quran that one should not respect laws of the cuntry, a soldier get his emolument from Pakistan army and stealthly for some other outfit engaged against interest o the country. Is anywhere written that betryal of ones oath is permissible.
Aftab kenneth Wilson. Supreme judges themselves have defied their oath and abetted the dictators, times and again became party to military coups and abrogation of the constitutions, none of the generals or the judges ever had been made answerable even in the name sake. A civil prime minister is being tried, most probably will be convicted.
@basharat: A copy of this oath should be sent to our superior courts and who ever helped them both in the past and present to abrogate the constitution should be charged according to the Article 6 of our disfigured and double edged sword like laws. Anyhow one can not rule out violent type of tendencies when one assumes and believes it to be true.
ali khan is not a single person there is a mind set that is working on the behalf of capitalist durring ist afghan war between russia and america the group is legalise under the zia regime.. The union of extreemist and capitalist is only responsible for all the damage or loss of innocent lives throughout in the world. In other words we can say that islamic extremism and capitalism is the two sides of one single quen.
@basharat: For me, my Allegience lies with the Holy Quran, Islam & ALlah (PBUH) & later comes everything else. Ask any Muslim in this country, & he'll tell u the same!
Members of Armed Forces of Pakistan are not allowed to take part in any political activity in any manner whatsoever, before entering in active service a soldier or an officer is required to undertake and oath of allegiance in the following words, " In the name of Allah the most Beneficent, the most Merciful. I, ---------- do solemnly swear that I will bear true faith and allegiance to Pakistan and uphold the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan which embodies the will of the people, that I will not engage myself in any political activities whatsoever and that I will honestly and faithfully serve pakistan Army ( or Navy or Airforce ) as required by the law." It is clear from the language of the Oath that the members of Armed Forces of Pakistan cannot be members of any organisation ( banned or otherwise) working for political ends. HuT claims to bring revolution which means destroying present political set up in the country, which amounts to committing an offence defined in Article 6 of our constitution.
@Aftab kenneth Wilson:
Why should HuT be banned in UK? HuT is only harming Muslim countries, its not harming UK or the West.
Hizb is not a militant organisation. As for Army's argument. Let me tell you some of their other point of views. They wrote a report that they should never be allowed in Pakistan because they are a security threat. They forbade officers to have internet for many years. I have 2 brothers and many cousins and uncles in all branches of armed forces and I know too much about them to really buy this argument that he had ties with Hizb in first place, and even he did that Hizb is a danger to Pakistan. Hizb is as dangerours to them, as cell phones and internet was to them until few years ago. Fact that Brig Ali openly questioned Generals in a meeting has something to do with this drama.
One thing for sure - all is not right within our Armed forces. The sooner it is put right, the better it will be for Pakistan.
The only thing that serves to provide the ideological backdrop necessary for groups like the Hizb to exist and gain traction is the failed Pakistani state and the complete lack of a culture of accountability on any level -- be it political or within the military. One only needs to think of the re-opening of supply lines for NATO a mere 2 months after 24 soldiers were DELIBERATELY targeted and killed on Nov. 26th or the treatment Aafia Siddiqui vs. Raymond Davis. His activities were WELL KNOWN and DONE IN THE OPEN, Kiyani finally lost his cool and this show-trial and conviction is being used to silence any dissent within the ranks. Until there is a culture of accountability within the Pakistani public, political class, and army nothing will change.
I wonder why HuT is not banned in UK? This organization has penetrated in most Muslim countries, specially in the Armed Forces and like minded so called political/religious parties. It is banned in Pakistan and one wonders why it took so late for our outfits to pinpoint their followers in our Armed Forces???
HuT might not be a militant organization by itself but it does serve to provide ideological genome that feeds the grievance based paradigm that Muslims are the victims and their problems can only be fixed through re-establishment of Khilafa. There might not be much wrong with it except that it builds on false premises. However, what makes it worse is when this very ideology is exploited by militant organizations downstream. For Pakistan, the issue is more significant because of nuclear arsenal; it has been traditionally aimed as the to-be power hub of this new khilafa by militants and therefore a key target as well.
According to a news report: "Brigadier Ali Khan’s lawyer said that his client was detained for demanding that someone within the military be held accountable for the covert U.S. Navy SEALs raid that killed bin Laden in Abbottabad".
So was he arrested because he was he a member of of Hizbut Tahrir or because he took his superiors to task?
Unfortunately us "humble civilians" will never find out.
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto damaged the bureaucracy and Zia ul Haq damaged the Army. They both have become self serving cadres. Pervez Musharaf damaged the politician class who are also beyond repair. this is the real trioka which is ruling the country without any meaningful accountability.
Actually HuT is not a militant organization, it's a purely intellectual and political organization, in fact it considers militancy to be illegitimate, had there been any evidence of militancy UK would have banned it.
The only reason this party was banned by General Musharraf was that it exposed it's policies in public.
Chief Justice should take suo moto notice and put aside illegal ban and let the intellectual debate take place!
If such allegation were leveled against a top brass then it must also be explained at what level there was cooperation and what were they trying to achieve by this....?????
I live in UK and have concerns about the managers of HuT , the way they are operating the Good Idea in a very confused way and dual standards, and YES University of London's student Union has banned HuT to operate gatherings in university affiliated colleges !
Why doesn't Our Government Establish Khilafah?
@hammad: Who told u that?
So HuT tries to instigate mutiny in the Army, and then people like those above offer excuses for them as well?
Hizb is the only organization in the world working to establish a modern dynamic islamic state by peaceful means. Any one can be influenced by the idea, Whats wrong with it? Is it illegal in a country where 99% muslims live to establish khilafah?
@ colonel
Read latest about HuT coup attempt in Bangladesh.
Punishment must be according to illegal work has been done and must be memorable for peole
Persons of his kind, speaks of the general frustration prevailing amongst the rank and file against the liberal lifestyle and mindset existing in such institutions. It is only a glimpse of a much larger group of people who want to rebel against the elaborate living standards in the armed forces of this poor country today.
HuT is not anti Pakistani, I suspect this man had links with some other strong terrorist organization to cover up the real story HUT name was used
Militant organisation? So you reckon if the organisation was militant it will be allowed to function in the UK? This is what happens if you raise you voice against corruption within the top civilian-military brass, American intervention in Pakistan and WOT. Basically this is what you get when you try to align the state with Islam - Court martial!
Why is HuT banned? shame on Pak army.
Hut is not a banned organisation in UK infact it's the only organisation allowed in UK to work freely, many students from different universities are part of it. This organisation is banned in pakistan (Musharraf banned it) not in UK Please get your facts right.
Hizb is like a cancer. Good work Army! Nip the evil in the bud.
Go ahead and show the result soon to the world community in order to restore the image of the nation and to discourage such elements in the army .
