The five-day International Schools Educational Olympiad (ISEO) at Karachi High School (KHS) concluded in style, with a red marquee, balloons, music and speeches by renowned scholars to boot. Students from over 140 schools took part in the various activities that included theatre, art, cyber fair and chess.
Students of Beacon House School System bagged the highest number of cups and medals.
The winners were ecstatic with the results. “I made a drawing on the overflowing gutters in the city, and how after some years, it will have a bad impact on the country,” gushed 10-year-old Mahnoor Safdar. “I am so happy my drawing got the first prize.”
Nine-year-old Angaleen Maryam from Karachi Grammar School participated in the classical dance category. Angaleen, who is a student of Sheema Kirmani, said that she had been dancing for the last three years. “I am very happy that I won.”
The Looney awards were also given out to participants sporting wacky dresses and accessories. One of the winners in this category, selected by actor Marina Khan, had stuck a toy gun to his hat. “I was inspired by the drone attacks and the war going on in Afghanistan,” he said.
Former Higher Education Commission chairman Dr Attaur Rehman addressed the students. “We are made of star dust, so shine and let the light of knowledge illuminate you,” he said, while referring to scientific breakthroughs that can help a blind man see with the help of a camera on his tongue and enable a paralysed person to move with a sensor hat placed on his head.
Three teachers from Wales were present as part of the KHS connecting classroom program. One of them, Dylan Wright said, “It is great to be here, and to see so much talent in these young children.”
The ISEO lamp, signifying the torch lit at the Olympics, was jointly lit by KHS principal Parveen Kassim and the guest teachers.
