Black box recovered, handed over to CAA

The black box of Airblue's crashed plane has been found which is crucial to determine the cause of the disaster.

ISLAMABAD: In the latest development into the horrific Airblue crash investigation, the black box has been found on Saturday which is crucial to determine the cause of the disaster.

Sources said that the black box has been handed over to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Speaking to Express, DG CAA Junaid Amin confirmed the black box that include flight data recorder and cockpit data recorder has also been recovered.

He said since a specialized kind of equipment needed to decode the black box is not available in Pakistan, it will be sent Germany or France to extract the information. He said that the process of extraction can take six months or a year.

Speaking to the media, Islamabad DIG Binyameen said they have handed over all the collected material to the concerned authorities.

Earlier today, a French team reached the crash site to look for the evidence and black box.

Why does this conradictate with this statement (From Dawn News): "Pervez George, a CAA spokesman, told Dawn that the device would now be sent to France or Germany for decoding as no such facility was available in Pakistan. We should have this technology, every time we have a plane crash we should have to depend on other countries? We shouldn't have to depend on other countries for anything!

Malik Tariq Ali | 14 years ago | Reply It should take no more than two months at the most to come up with an interim report on investigations. The decoding of FDR should take at the most a week after it has been delivered to those asigned to decode it. We caanot afford to lose our already dented credibilty. It is time for a change. The report needs to be published, so that in future our pilots, engineers, mechanics, ATC controllers and the airlines do not repeat the same mistakes and the CAA ensures that they do not. What needs to be investigated is the role of Maintenance Repair Overhaul companies assigned to handle our aircrafts. Even PIA now relies on MRO by foreign companies to repair and overhaul almost all the engines in use and most of the avionics. CAA must verify the credibilty of these companies and also ensure that no airline executive has a partnership through frontmen in any of these companies. PIA laws prohibit their employees from such activities, but these rules have been compromised in the past and continue to be compromised even now. Pakistan Railways suffered from the same irregularities with disastrous consequences. Aviation is a very un-forgiving industry. There is no room for complacency or compromises. You need the best men to run them, who have both integrity and competence.

Meekal Ahmed | 14 years ago | Reply I don't think they will publish the details because they never have so before in 62 years. They will just hope that people will forget and be on to other things. Even if they did, before making it public the have the option/right to make deletions wherever they wish and call it "sensitive" information. We have no concept of transparency and/or accountability. It's not going to start suddenly now. The media can play a role here and keep up the pressure. But the media will lose interest and be writing about something else. It does NOT take six months to a year to decode the CVR and DFDR. I think it is being sent to the States. They could do it in a week/weeks. The accident report itself could take about a year possibly more to complete. The CVR and DFDR is usually attached as a Appendix. They will probably not release the CVR (which is the more interesting of the two) earlier on the grounds that making it public will "prejudice" the investigation. Normally, in western countries some smart media person gets a hold of the CVR and publishes it.

What was mystery 60 years ago is still mysterious. Rather, the mystery deepens with every passing day. Pakistani are always kept in dark of the facts and realities. But we hope the history is not repeated this time. The entire Pakistani nation wait anxiously to know the true and exact causes of heart-wrenching crash of Air blue. It is heatening to note tha black box believed to be revealing the causes is finally found. Let it be decoded irrespective of the fact who decodes it. We are only concerned with the true information. But, yes, it does seem strange that no competent authority is available in Pakistan to decode the message of Black box. It's a question to ponder.

Especially it is needless to point out when our Government has cut Budgetary allocation for education this year compared to last year. Are we going forward or like to lag behind. It was not bad weather surely - The air craft was seen still flying at low altitude coming down towards ground what was the last transmission by pilot ,Initially pilot was given final clearance runway for landing was allocated it was on final approach what made him to change his mind what mad him to enter the restricted Zone why there was no mayday call, we want the whole transcript of the black box and ATC conversation to be publish the whole nation want to know this . We are loosing Army soldiers including top ranking official we are loosing high level honest civil officials our economy, health, Education, social services, law and order situation is in very high bad state corrupt leaders in power are watching and have no conscience or power to tackle it and our economy generating resources and business ventures are going down the drain our enemies are trying to de-stabilized us- our nation needs to wake up-its not just Benazir death its not just Gen Zia and PAF Air chief Fokker crash and its not many other crimes and killings in Pakistan which has been hushed up this is another great tragedy and a great nation loss and this must be published just give the nation proof that it was not shot down over Islamabad-

On the one hand India is launching sending Satellites to space but on the other hand we as a Pakistnis cannot even decode transcription / messages from a Black Box - what a pitty. Having all the events / facts read and seen over TV, my question is why the ill fated plane was allowed by CAA authorities to Land at Islamabad Airport when the landing environment was not at all conducive. Instead of granting permission, and allowing the Pilot to land, they ara actually the culprits and should be taken to task for murdering so many valuable lives. Unless check and balance and Justice will not prevail, we as a Pakistanis will instead of going forward will be going backwards which would be disastrous for the coming Pakistan Generations. CAA Chief said yesterday "Amin said the team had failed to recover the black box yet. “The Flight Data Recorder (Black Box) and the Cockpit Voice Recorders (CVR) could not be located in today’s search. The teams will make a breakthrough in this regard on Saturday hopefully,” he said. Amin said that once the box was recovered it will be sent to France to be decoded. Aarrgh!

Syed A. Mateen | 14 years ago | Reply Let us wait and see if the familes of the deceased passengers and the nation will come to know the truth why ED-202 crashed. It is very strange that we claim our techinical expertise in every sphere of life but are unable to decode the black box. Sending black box for decoding in the foreign hands means that whatever the information communicated to Government of Pakistan will be the true and it will also be final. So we have to depend on foreign hands and thus we should rule out the possibilty that there might be a foreign hand behind the crash ED-202, or there was an attempt to hijack the plane or some in the aircraft wanted to crash the plane at a specific location.
