
Two graduating batches of CIIT on Thursday were urged to be there for the country, especially now when it needs them most.
The institute’s rector, Dr S M Junaid Zaidi, reminded students of Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s famous adage “unity, faith and discipline”, and said these three qualities were needed now more than ever before.
Over 1,200 students of the COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) were awarded graduate and postgraduate degrees in two different ceremonies marking the institute’s 39th and 40th convocations in the Convention Centre.
A total of 1,240 students secured undergraduate degrees in bioinformatics, biosciences, business administration, computer engineering, electrical engineering, telecommunication engineering, electronics, mathematics and architecture from Islamabad campus of the institute.
Meanwhile, masters degrees were awarded to 79 students in management sciences, electrical engineering, architecture, physics, computer science, biosciences, meteorology and mathematics. PhD degrees were awarded to 11 students in physics, biosciences and mathematics.
Federal minster Changaiz Khan Jamali, Chancellor and Patron of CIIT, awarded the gold medals to position holders from CIIT campuses across the country. Graduates and postgraduate students with a CGPA of 3.75 bagged campus medals and chancellor’s gold medals while patron medal was given to Bushra Qadir and Maria Mukhtar Dar for getting a CGPA of 4.
The gold medallists include Farah Zaib Khan, Asfandyar Farooq Khan, Muhammad Usman, Zohaib Hanif, Muhammad Ijaz, Syed Burhan-e-Ud Muhammad Bokhari, Maliha Shah, Abdul Latif, Saadia Awan, Raja Ahmed Jamil, Mehwish Jabeen Awan for Fall Semester 2010.
Sofia Naureen Khan, Nabeela Khan, Saadia Awan, Syeda Annum Ali, Nayab Ali Khan, Danish Faraz Abbasi, Mehran Tahir, Shumaila Irum, Sajida Mushtaq, Sana Ayub and Sahar Imitaz from Spring Semester 2011 also got gold medals.
Jamali said COMSATS has made significant contributions to science and technology education, which is need of the hour. He added that the institute is committed to providing the best opportunities for learning and personal development within a caring and supportive environment.
Dr Junaid said, “Being fully aware of the importance of education as a driver of economy and research and development, we promote quality education and inculcate research culture in the institution.”
