When you’re a celebrity, you have bundles of cash to splurge on buying exotic pets. And Hollywood is full of stars who like unique companions, which make heads turn on the streets and make headlines in tabloids.

Here’s a list of a few celebrities with bizarre friends from the animal kingdom:

Caprio’s exotic tortoise

Leonardo DiCaprio bought a huge tortoise in 2010. The Blood Diamond actor bought the 10-year-old Sulcata tortoise for $400 (Rs36,000) at the North American reptile breeders conference and trade show in California.

According to gossip website TMZ, Leonardo pre-ordered the animal — whose native habitat is Africa — from Prehistoric Pets, a California-based store specialising in reptiles.

A hybrid fit for a ‘vampire’

Kristen Stewart, as Bella Swan, is a werewolf’s love interest in The Twilight Saga. But interestingly enough in real life, the 20-year-old beauty is attracted to wolves herself. She is the proud owner of a wolf-dog named Jack and has often been spotted with it.

A primate for the Kardashians

In February 2009, the Kardashian sisters got a pet monkey, named Suzy, for themselves.  Apparently the three-years-old primate is quite a handful for the Kardashian sisters and their mother.

Tyson’s ferocious friend

Do you remember Mike Tyson’s pet in The Hangover – a huge tiger with a formidable roar. Well, did you know that Tyson actually owned three white tiger before he declared bankruptcy in 2004? During the divorce proceedings against his wife, Monica Turner, the fighter listed the bill for his tigers’ care and feeding at $4,000 (Rs360,000) a month.

Published in The Express Tribune, January 21st, 2012.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated the amount for the care and feeding of Mike Tyson's tigers. This has been corrected.
