Gas project: ‘Pak-Iran pipeline to be completed by 2014’

Project expected to facilitate import of 700 million cubic feet of gas every day through the 2,100 kilometre pipeline

ISLAMABAD:

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar expects that the Pak-Iran gas pipeline will be completed by 2014 and dismissed the impression that progress on the project had slowed due to fresh US sanctions on Iran.

While talking to the Voice of Germany the minister mentioned that ongoing work was rapidly progressing and would reach completion in the near future.

The minister explained that the US sanctions on Iran were related to petroleum goods and excluded gas.

The National Bank of Pakistan and the Oil and Gas Development Company recently backed out of the project due to the US sanctions.

The project is expected to facilitate the import of 700 million cubic feet of gas every day through the 2,100 kilometre pipeline which will ease the current energy crisis.

Well, may be there is partial truth in it!

The pipe line MAY BE completed by 2014 but will the gas flow through it from Iran?

The US sanctions against Iran target central banks dealing; hence is unlikely SBP will clear any checks for Iran, and indeed SBP is not backing it now. So,practically the project is dead.

The last time I read that Iran is going to put the bill for constructing the pipeline at the pak side. I wonder how PAK FM can make the claim that they will complete it by 2014.

The veracity of the statement is questionable and I am not sure how the project will be functional when PAK oil and Gas is also out?
