Yearly review: Lahore police arrested over 11,000 drug dealers

Lahore police launched a special campaign against drug dealing in the city in 2011.

LAHORE: Lahore police arrested more than 11,000 people in 2011 under a special campaign that it launched drug dealing, according to statement released on Tuesday.

Lahore police chief Ahmad Raza Tahir, who is also the chairperson of the Lahore Drug Free City Project, has directed officers to ensure eradication of drug dens in the city and warned of legal proceedings against those whose sectors dens are found to continue operation.

In 2011, police registered 10,627 cases and arrested 11,400 culprits. As many as 1,519 kilogrammes of hashish, 778 intoxicating pills, 2,146 injections and 70,795 bottles of liquor were recovered from their possession.

Speaking to citizens at his office, Tahir said that enforcement teams have been constituted to work under the supervision of superintendents, station house officers, Anti-Narcotics Force personnel, excise inspectors and drug inspectors. He called for intensifying the crackdown against drug peddlers in Lahore, which he said is the top priority of Lahore police.

SSP (discipline and inspection) Shariq Kamal, who is the focal person of the project, was also present at the occasion.
