LAHORE:

Businessmen have threatened the government that they will launch a civil disobedience movement if Punjab continues to face discrimination in gas supply to industries.

The warning came in a highly charged meeting of the heads of all Punjab chambers, which met at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday to chalk out a joint strategy against suspension of gas supply which had crippled industrial and economic activities.

They asked the government to ensure equal sharing of gas shortage among all provinces instead of burdening Punjab with all the shortage. Many aggressive traders and businessmen called for immediate launch of street protests and agitation with the support of workers besides the civil disobedience campaign, but some others took a lenient view.

In the end, they decided to stage a protest in front of the Governor House and then a sit-in in front of the prime minister’s Lahore residence on January 7.
