System failure: Arms licence digitisation system no longer in use

KARACHI:

The recently launched ‘computerised arms licence management information system’ by the defunct city district government (CDGK) has become almost dysfunctional merely a month after its inauguration, sources told PPI.

The system was inaugurated on November 11, 2011. Its purpose was to collect the record of all arms licences issued during the tenure of the defunct CDGK. In the second phase, the record was to be digitised.

The system would also provide for an arms licence holder to obtain his/her information by entering the holder’s National Identity Card on the website. This facility was scheduled to be launched by February 2012.

Sources said that the data of more than 2,000 arms licences had already been computerised. However, after the revival of the commissioner system, this project has become dysfunctional.
