Whatmore, who led Sri Lanka to victory at the 1996 World Cup, is currently in charge of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Twenty20 Indian Premier League.
“Whatmore is due to come to Pakistan sometime next month to discuss issues relating to our search for a head coach,” Pakistan Cricket Board senior board official Subhan Ahmad said.
“It would be premature to say we have taken a decision to appoint Whatmore as head coach but we are in the process of interviewing candidates and Whatmore is a front runner.”
The 57-year-old Whatmore, who played seven tests for Australia, has also enjoyed a successful coaching spell with Bangladesh, leading them to their first test match and subsequent series win in 2005.
Whatmore came close to being appointed Pakistan coach in 2007 before the PCB selected his compatriot Geoff Lawson.
Pakistan face England in a test and one-day series starting next month with interim coach and chief selector Mohsin Khan continuing to lead the side.
Mohsin was in charge for the recent test series victories over Bangladesh and Sri Lanka after Waqar Younis resigned as head coach in September due to personal and health reasons.

hope he negotiates for an life insurance cover as part of his CTC package. Best of Luck.
What-more do we need? Team is doing fine! A short term fielding coach can be good though, if the boys take him seriously i.e
I think it is very good decision taken by PCB to appoint DEV Whatmore as a head coach. I hope he will do his best to improve the capabilities of the players of our team. No doubt Mohsin is doing well but he is just for part time. Dev Whatmore's record is absolutely fantastic and he proved his self as good and talented coach. I hope our players will learn more from his experience and they will their 100%.
Bad Decision again by the PCB (Money Mongers). PCB can setup a group of coaches in domestic circuit (where actually coaches are required) in the pay they are going to give to Mr. Whatmore (What more can he do :)? I don't understand) They are paying much to the PCB officials than the Players who are actually serving their country . Their pay should be less than the players. The Domestic talented players should also given contracts not parchi players(Imran Farhat).

Bad timing; usual hip-shooting by PCB. Did PCB consider the implications on Mohsen's commitment to the England tour? Why change the winning combination, if Mohsen is delivering, why the fascination with foreign coaches?
