Jamaatud Dawa (JD) chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed vowed on Sunday that the jihad to oust Indian forces from Kashmir would continue, the first time he has made a reference to jihad since his group was declared a terrorist outfit by the United Nations in 2009.

Saeed was speaking at the ‘Difa-i-Pakistan Conference’, a gathering of thousands of supporters of Wahhabi and Deobandi parties at Minar-i-Pakistan on Sunday to protest against ‘US and Nato terrorism’. All the speakers at the rally called for jihad and told their supporters to prepare for war.

During his speech, Difa-i-Pakistan Council Chairman Maulana Samiul Haq read out an oath to the audience that they would participate in jihad when the Council gave the call. “We will attack Indian, US, Russian and Nato forces if they try to violate Pakistan’s sovereignty,” they said, repeating after Haq.

Haq said the various parties at the conference had united and would work together until their goals were achieved.

The organisers had invited the parents of men killed fighting in Kashmir and Afghanistan to the conference. A man who had lost three sons and two nephews was called to the dais to speak briefly. From the stage, men on loudspeakers led the crowd in chants of ‘Sabilina sabilina, al jihad al jihad’, ‘India ka aik ilaaj, al jihad al jihad’.

‘Difa-i-Pakistan jihad-i-fi sabilillah se hoga’ (Pakistan’s defence is only possible through jihad) proclaimed a huge banner, decorated with images of missiles, tanks and fighter jets, that formed the backdrop to the stage. Speakers walked to the stage accompanied by gunmen.

The crowd was dominated by JD activists waving the group’s black and white striped flag, which is also the flag of Lashkar-i-Taiba, proscribed as a terrorist outfit by Pakistan. In December 2009, the UN declared JD an alias of LT, which is believed responsible for the Mumbai terror attacks.

Some in the crowd also waved the flag of Sipah-i-Sahaba, another banned terrorist outfit. Supporters of the Jamaat-i-Islami, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Sami), Tanzim-i-Islami, Aalmai Khatme Nabuwat, Tanzim Mashaikh Azzaam, Jamiat Ahle Hadith and Majlis-i-Ahrar also turned out in large numbers.

In his address, Hafiz Saeed said jihad was obligatory for Muslims. He said if the Americans tried to invade Pakistan, they would be resisted and killed. He said America had been trying to get Israel to take out Pakistan’s nuclear weapons, but was now planning the task itself. He said that Pakistan and Afghanistan were like twin brothers; whoever tried to harm one, would have to face the people of the other country. He demanded that the Pakistani government end all contacts with the US. He said that a similar rally would be held in Rawalpindi. “We will no longer fight America’s war, we will fight Pakistan’s war,” he said.

Saeed said that his support for Kashmir remained firm. “We were with Kashmiris and are with Kashmiris,” he said.

He said that JD would not allow the government to grant most-favoured nation trading status to India. “We will surround the markets where Indian goods are sold,” he said, adding a call for revenge against India for the separation of Bangladesh from Pakistan.

JD leader Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki said that the participants wielding JD flags had been trained to use rifles and Kalashnikovs. “When they head towards India with weapons, no one can resist them,” he said.

Former ministers Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed and Ijazul Haq, son of the late dictator Gen Ziaul Haq, also addressed the participants.

Maulana Ahmad Ludhianvi spoke against Ahmedis. He said that US-Pakistani businessman Mansoor Ijaz was an Ahmedi and was conspiring against Pakistan in the form of the memo scandal. He said 4,000 young people he had sent for jihad had died.

Former Inter Services Intelligence chief General (retired) Hameed Gul said Pakistan did not want war against the US, but “America has destroyed our lives and now we have no choice but to take a firm stand against it”. He said that he supported those who wanted to fight for the country after the Nato strikes that killed 24 soldiers. He said that an Islamic revolution, not general elections, was what Pakistanis needed to resolve their problems.

Syed Ziaullah Shah Bukhari, Maulana Tahir Ashrafi, Maulana Zahidul Raashdi, Abdullah Shah Mazhar, Hafiz Ibtisam Ilahi Zaheer, Maulana Mazhar Javed and Maulana Bashir Ahmed Sial also spoke at the rally.

This rally showed it clearly that JD, Hafiz Saeed, terrorist orgs like Sipah Sahaba and their political apologists all are just one intity in different garbs whenever it is required. I think it is ISI is ulitmate threat to US in order to receive Bhatta for their mercernry work. Bjut their problem is going to be well informed US admn under President Ubama and the Pakistanis who finally have understood the game and supporting Imran Khan.

Readers must know that Jamat Islami has been asking for $$$$$$ thru different organizatiions but failed. That is why they are now threatening. It has nothing to do with KASHMIR, ISLAM OR PAKISTAN. IT IS ABOUT HOW CAN THEY HAVE $$$$$…As far ret Gen Hamid Gul is concerned, he is a shaky character who has been working for CIA undercover and kept alive for all parties for a time when he will act a intermediatery to save face for all parties involved…like negotiationg with Taliban on behalf of Taliban.

You are absolutely right! There is a zero chance that Kashmir will either be handed over to pakistan, or it can pry it open from india by force. Remember, Kashmir is not just a philosophy for india( more than 35 states and union teritories, huge diversity in language/religion/terrain/culture), our integration is our essence of our Nation State and a highly integrated national identity. So no chance of giving up kashmir, which also includes jammu and ladakh. Its like canada or Russia asking USA to give up Alaska or France asking UK to give up the channel islands/isle of Man.
Also, hafiz saeed is doing this to keep his business and cashflows going. They too know, theey cant get any support from any quarter as they are seen as terrorists.
This year, kashmir saw a record tourist arrival in its entire history. The local population thinks if the jihadis shut up for once, kashmir hotels will be totally booked out for next 5 years giving huge employment for the public.
Every one understand that the young need jobs and a better quality of life. Jihad will hardly get anyone any of that. already non state actors and jihadiis have macde kashmir lose 20 years of progress. enough is enough.

Also frankly i think the gov and all of us should be more concerned on managing whatever we have rather than getting back Kashmir and mishandling and ruining it like Pakistan too.
I am a Pakistani and I really feel for the atrocities but I really feel first we should help ourselves then others, phele apne aap ku tou theek karein, economy, education, security, health all going down, corruption inflation increasing every day, with such threats of ‘’so called islamists”’ I don’t feel we can afford to advice, safe or protect anyone else other than our own selves right now. It should be just about Pakistan, why the hell can’t we have our own policy rather than dragging liberation of Kashmir in every issue??
I know I will get bashed, but I am fed up, I don’t see how it is such a big deal if in occupied territory ppl are getting killed, kidnapped, raped, Muslims are terrorized, when the same exact same is happening every day in our country? so as long as we have Kashmir it will be ok if the same continues there and here??Instead of fighting for Kashmir Afghanistan we should fight jihad against illiteracy, corruption intolerance, give rights to Baluchistan before pointing finger at India for depriving Kashmir’s. It is sickening and I just am fed up of this whole blame the world for our mess approach!!

We can create problems for each other but words like’ capture and invade’ just throw them out of the window anyone who talks on these lines on either side of the border is just trying to stay in the news to get the personal benefits that accrue. My solution is have peace and make the borders irrelevant like in the the EU or USA &Canada have no requirement of visas then i can drive down to Lahore whenever i want and you can drive down to Goa or Srinagar whenever you want . I find it ironic that when people of Pakistan get together in order to show their resolve to protect Pakistan against foreign aggression and to protect its sovereignty, they are labeled as “Terrorists” by Indians and Pro-Indians. However, when your right BJP, RSS, Shiv Sena and other hindu leaders openly talk about their hate against Pakistan, they become “Patriots”.

When destruction of Babri Majid, Gujrat genocide, Oppression on Kashmiris, Golden Temple Attack (Operation Blue Star)and poverty of 450 million Dalits come under discussion, that topics ‘Instantly’ becomes “Internal Matters of India”. However, Indians and pro-Indians find their birth-right to openly criticize policies of Pakistan and actions of Pakistani masses.

When leaders of Pakistan raise their voice to show their solidarity with Muslims of Kashmir, their voice instantly becomes “Problem in solving Kashmir Issue” for Indians and their supporters. However, the same people become blind to see the presence of 7,00,000 Indian soldiers in Kashmir as a “Problem in solving Kashmir issue”.

Will these Indians and their supporters ever learn sanity????

Delighted to see most Pakistanis reponse towards the JuD chief. Most Western experts including India consider JuD/LeT as one of the most dangerous outfit but unfortunately for the state they are an asset to be used India. However, recent statement by Hafiz Saeed that they want sharia in Pakistan indicate their intention of waging jihad is a ominous sign. After-all this charitable organisation wants charity of jihad to begin at home.

Let’s make Pakistan a very prosperous, peacefull, developed, successful and greatest country of the world. If we do that, I am sure not only Kashmiris, everyone in India would be begging us to let them in. Many Pakistanis are so preoccupied with fighting and waging Jihad they dont really care about building their country. Fighting and winning Kashmir is not going to make your lives any better. And there is no certainity that Pakistan will win Kashmir like this and also that the Kashmiris will want to join Pakistan in the first place. There were close to 1m tourists this year in the valley. I doubt the Pakistani side gets even 1/5th those many. People need a livelihood and being on the Indian side currently is a better idea on that front.

We are aware there are enough muslims and hindus who are extremists in India as well in addition to Dalits and poor people and we are trying to change that. Its a slow process with many hurdles but things have got better and the trend should continue. Poverty is a reallity in India and Pakistan and just pointing out India has more poor people than Pakistan doesnt mean living in Pakistan is like living in Switzerland. India should be such a huge market for Pakistani goods but instead Pakistan is preoccupied with freeing Kashmir. If life in India was so bad for muslims the muslim population in India would have dropped significantly but in actuallity the reverse has happened. The number of minorities now in comparsion to 1947 in Pakistan is something we are all aware off. I dont want to get into the fate of minorities cause there have been attrocities on both sides of the border.

To use the logic that India also has crazy extremists spouting violence so why shouldnt Pakistan makes no sense. When a Pakistani openly threatens to wage war against India and is known to be a extremist but is allowed to do so openly, it just shows the state of society. The Indian rightwingers will play the hindu-muslim card for political mileage but they dont directly tell Hindus or Indians to wage war against Pakistanis thus its an internal matter.

These are just my thoughts. Alot of introspection is needed on both sides of the border.

Hafiz Saeed reminds me of the saying: “with friends like these, who needs enemies”. He should be denounced by Pakistanis themselves since he gives their country a bad name (at the very least). Instead of indulging in flamewars (like this one in response to this news article), Indians and Pakistanis should condemn persons who are violent or promote violence and hatred, whether that person is Indian or Pakistani. It is dumb to defend him just because he belongs to one’s own country.Recommend

That would be wonderful. However, Canada and USA have political sovereignty over their territories. The only reason Pakistan was made was so that Muslims would have a country where they were a majority and which they could call their own.Kashmir is very important to Pakistanis and it would be easier for us to part with an arm than accept that Pakistan will never be whole (including the whole of Kashmir). It’s also important for us to be water independent which every country wishes to be.
On the flip side, for India, Kashmir is a symbol. They are afraid that by giving up Kashmir they will encourage a hundred more separatism movements in their country which may be fatal for them.
In a situation where a diplomatic solution is impossible, is it so crazy to state that a military option may be the only option aside from giving up.

India will never part with Kashmir, period. You have made three attempts at prying it out of our hands by force with nothing to show for your efforts except losing half your country. Go ahead, make our day. Try again!

Fourth times the charm. Btw I’m not advocating an immediate military solution. I’m just saying that if in five to ten years we get nothing out of the talks, a military solution may be the only solution to the problem. It will be a like a bandage, ripping it off quickly will hurt less then prolonging it.
Pakistan is a much smaller and poorer country then India, with a smaller army and less strategic depth. For this reason, groups like JuD are so important for any hope of success. They have the ability to rally millions to war in the name of religion in a very shot time frame and almost no cost. They arm themselves, feed themselves, pay themselves and are happy to do it as long as we leave them be. So Pakistanis, before you disrespect these groups know that they may be the only way we’ll ever liberate Kashmir someday (I assume you want that to happen)Recommend

I am surprised that learned commentators are not ready to accept the right of Hafiz Saeed to express his point of view. People oppsoing his views are available only on commnets pages of wesbites. But ground reality is that Hafiz Saeed and his JuD enjoys heavy public support in Pakistan. JuD has deep roots in Pakistani soeity. It has the ability to walk along with mainstream political parties.
It would not be wrong to say that he reflects majority’s sentiments. He gathered more than one hundreds thousand people at Minar-e-Pakistan. Those who oppose his point of view in Pakistan are not able to gather even ten thousand people to support their point of view. On same day (18th December) Pakistan Peoples Party and All Pakistan Muslim League (Musharraf’s political party) organized public rallies but both parties failed to attract more than two thousand people (combine figure of both separate rallies).

Instead of crticizing Hafiz Saeed and likes we need to accept them as a reality and talk to them to alter their world view (If we think he needs to change). Lets have a positive approach. US is forced to talk to Taliban after ten years of War…So why dont we start dialogue with right wing extremists of our country.

There was a time when Jamat-e-Islami was too strict in its approach but when it started to work with other political parties it has now become relatively moderate religious party. JuD too can follow same path of moderation if we start to accept it as a ligitimate part of our society

@Usman: There are millions of Muslims living in India and they do not want to leave to go live in Pakistan. What does that tell the world is that they are quite happy in India which means that neither Shiv-sena or any other group is creating unlivable situation for them. Also any Indian organisation is causing trouble of the type Saeed wants to cause in India. If Pakistan really wants good relations with India it should stop exporting trouble and put behind bars such murderers as Saeed behind bars and throw the keys away. Though it’s hard for liars and bigoted hypocrites to do, maybe it’s time for them to drop their charity organization lie considering their hate politics. It’s a bit despicable.

These xenophobic guys aren’t just a threat to India and internationally, they’re a threat domestically to Pakistan, and those that are defending their ‘freedom of speech’ may want to rethink their sympathetic association with fascist anti-Pakistani Kharjite militants and terrorists.

They’re going to target shops that sell Indian goods. Anti-business and sabotaging the Pakistan economy through violence. They’ve sent young men to their deaths for terrorist and militant activities as admitted by their maulana. Wasted young Pakistani lives that could have had a peaceful future building the country instead (this is where freedom of speech probably should have stopped and a public arrest made instead…but it’s Pak).

Sipah-e-Sahaba were in their crowd, which implies anti-Shia Pakistani sectarian terrorists, racists and bigots among them, indeed confirmed religious intolerance and bigotry after all the anti-Ahmadi Pakistanis talk used as a smear against Mansoor Ijaz with extreme prejudice. No one likes the Memo-gate scandal, but there’s a difference between how a hateful lunatic conspiracist bigot discusses it as compared to how unbiased rational people discuss it.

Of course, not surprisingly the anti-semitic Zionist fantasy of taking our nukes…which probably might end up as a self-fulfilling prophecy now considering these local criminals want to overthrow our institutions and insert their extremist Wahhabi/Salafi/Deoband ideologies.

Maybe it has something to do with the establishment’s former ministers Ijaz-ul-Haq and Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed being there. Can we honestly say it’s only a few people who support such thinking? Even if it’s ‘few’, certainly dangerously powerful few at the top…

Nice touch by ex-ISI chief Hamid Gul, the Kharjite Taliban lover and traitor, who basically wants to rid us of civilian rule elections and install an Islamic revolution, not the peaceful one that we know from Rasool (SAW), no, but the fascist militant Wahhabi/Salafi/Deoband theocracy one.
