LAHORE:

A foreigner suspected of being a terrorist was arrested on Friday from Nawab Town. The management of the Idara Minhajul Hasnain said they had been keeping the 27-year-old Iranian citizen, Muhammad Ayaz, under surveillance for some days. On Friday they took him into custody and handed him over to police.

According to the police, the suspect is from Sistan. The police said that Ayaz had submitted an application for an identity card in Karachi giving a false name. In the application, he had claimed to be a son of a Karachi resident. Ayaz told police that he was visiting the place in hope of financial assistance.

Idara Minajul Hasnain head Maulana Hussain Ahmed Akbar told The Express Tribune that the suspect had several aliases. For the past three months he had lived in Raiwind. “He had no documents on him. He claimed to be poor but had visited Okara, Muzaffaragrh and Dera Ghazi Khan. He boasted that he had lived in the house of former Punjab governor Ghulam Mustafa Khar,” said the cleric.

The maulana said they had arrested another suspicious person around two weeks ago and handed him over to police. Saddar Division SP (Operations) Shoaib Khurram confirmed the arrest but refused to give any details stating that the complaint is being investigated.
