PESHAWAR: At least 21 militants were killed on Friday in two separate incidents of violence in Orakzai.

The first incident occurred when militants attacked a check-post in the Khanki area of Upper Orakzai, forcing the security forces to retaliate, killing 15 militants and injuring 21 of their own personnel, sources told The Express Tribune.

The number of injured may rise, an official source added.

In a separate incident, clashes ensued after a security official was killed when insurgents planted a landmine in the Khadezai region. Striking back, security personnel managed to kill seven militants, security personnel said.

The security official was killed when he stepped on the landmine planted by the roadside, sources said.

Soon after that, security forces launched heavy artillery shelling on militant hideouts that killed seven militants, and destroyed one hideout.

However, the casualties could not be verified independently.

The areas of Upper Orakzai have been considered the last hideout for militants after a military operation was launched here and the agency was declared “almost clear” of militants.

@khalis: Your observation is quite correct since highly improbable claims stating large number of militants being killed during aerial and artillery bombardments as well as during retialiatory attacks are being made without proper verification or proof for many years now with no significant change in the ground situation.
