Encounter: 3 robbers gunned down by police

LAHORE: Three alleged highway robbers were killed while two fled the scene during an encounter with the Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC) of Lahore and Saddar Sheikhupura police on Tuesday.

The Police recovered a stolen vehicle, three weapons and mobile phones from their possession.

According to police sources, the accused had snatched a vehicle from the Manga Mandi area in Lahore.

Inspector ACLC Faisal Sharif along with other policemen chased the robbers on a tip-off when they were en route to Islamabad via the Motorway. ACLC also informed Sheikhupura police about it.

Sheikhupura police tried to stop the robbers, but they opened fire and as a result of a firefight, three of them were killed.

One of the accused was identified as Akhtar Ali who is a resident of Amenabad in Gujranwala.

Police sources said that he was an offender of two Gujranwala police stations – Saddar and Ladday Wala – and was indicted under theft charges.

Sources further said that they were involved in highway robberies and had lately snatched vehicles from MPA Amna Ulfat and Senior Vice President of Lahore Bar Association Azfar Kamal Kharal.

Rs1.9 million in cash and a costly wrist watch was also stolen along with the cars in the jurisdiction of Bhikhi Police Station of District Sheikhupura on Faisalabad-Sheikhupura Road five months ago.

The bodies of the robbers were sent to District Headquarters Sheikhupura Hospital for autopsy.

Saddar Sheikhupura police station has registered a case in this regard while further investigation is underway.
