KARACHI: The development of information technology in Pakistan is very important because it gives more opportunities for business, said Chris Armitage, Area Vice President of Teradata.
Speaking to the media at the nomination call for the 10th National IT Excellence Awards here on Friday, Armitage said, “We get a lot of benefits from Pakistan in terms of revenues. It, therefore, makes sense to be part of the event.”
Sponsored by Teradata, a leading analytic data solution company based out of Ohio, United States, the annual award recognises the talent and achievements of IT professionals in Pakistan, said Khuram Rahat, Managing Director.
Giving background of the event, Rahat, an IBA graduate, said the awards were launched in 1997 to encourage usage and adaptation of IT, then an emerging industry, in Pakistan. Another purpose was to create mass awareness of the effectiveness and importance of IT.
The winners of the awards have received recognition both nationally and internationally, he said, some recipients have even got scholarships for higher studies and research opportunities in well-reputed institutes of the world.
Teradata is accepting applications for excellence in 12 categories namely software development, software export, networking, IT business intelligence, project management, IT-enabled service offering, IT education, IT research development, IT student (below 25 years of age), CIO of the year and lifetime achievement. It also announced one new category – IT media and publication – for the role of media in supporting the IT industry.
KPMG Taseer Hadi – a chartered accountant firm – will manage the whole process as an independent auditor to ensure transparency and neutrality, Rahat said.
The jury will comprise 12 leading IT professionals whose names are confidential, said Maliha Elahi, Manager Business Process. Nominations will cover the contribution of individuals and companies to the IT sector of Pakistan from January to December 2010, she added.
The three-week nomination process will end on January
6 while the award ceremony will be held in the second week of March next year, she said.
