The same lowered expectations were first highlighted when, on the night of the 9th of Muharram, a loud explosion was heard across Karachi. Police have described the cause as a gas cylinder, which seems almost to have disappointed the citizenry. To have gone through such dread and panic with no one to blame but the forces of pressure being applied to compressed natural gas seemed unfair and disappointing. All bang, no blood.
Similarly, the next day, news of President Zardari leaving the country urgently and under the cover of darkness resulted in claims of a coup having occurred. The unofficial explanation that he needed some medical care for a heart condition just seemed so much less exciting. Sure, it afforded us a few easy jokes about the heart attack being caused by our recent improvement in corruption rankings by Transparency International, but that was just the disappointment talking.
We no longer even hope that America will cease drone attacks in Pakistan. Attacks that have resulted in a couple of thousand civilians dead. Instead, we just ask them to clear out the maintenance hangar. A few mechanics go home and we call that a victory. If this is how we stake out territory, we should win back control of North Waziristan sometime in the next millennium.
It is no wonder then, that with this kind of attitude, the next election is shaping up not as a contest between potential winners, but a challenge to see who will lose the least. Entire campaign strategies revolve around promising voters that the candidates they choose wont be as bad as the other options. Not much better, just not worse.
Even Veena Malik disappointed us all by claiming the nude photos weren’t really nude. Now the progressives have no one to rally behind as a symbol of sexual confidence and the conservatives have no one to condemn for immoral conduct. It might explain the quick loss of momentum in the online debates, although that might just be because both sides discovered it’s difficult to type with just one hand.
With options like these available to us, our children will not be taught to reach for the stars, but to keep their hands firmly on their knees. When we write songs about ambition, their lyrics will include verses like ‘there ain’t no molehill high enough, ain’t no two-foot ditch deep enough, ain’t no urine stream wide enough, to keep me from getting to you’, and so on. Just don’t forget to thank the nice terrorists for not blowing you up. It was the least they could do. Literally.

i can't understand the point of this article. thank you for stating the obvious? hey lets take a look at what;s in the paper these days and type it out.
take a stance, have a agenda. this article is nowhere.
haahaah that was so funny sami shah - esp that bit about VM
Sami Shah, you are awesome! Your precision is better than a smart bomb, & I laughed once again, with a sadness holding me back, as your words are true.
Those were some big words coming from our Inferior Minister!
You are seriously funny dude.
brilliantly written!
LOL! Thanks for the laughs. You should try writing a book.
What a sad, disheartening and true commentary on our world and lives...in the main!
although that might just be because both sides discovered it’s difficult to type with just one hand.
I can see that you rediscovered it Sami
hmmm , for most people i guess you could just have written the hand sentance and got a standing ovation.Personally i think that was the weakest link.Completely agree with the rest though!!!
"We live in a world of lowered expectations. Our aspirations are blunted and our achievements embarrassingly attainable."
Seriously? One should think twice before making such proclamations. Not only this whole self-deprecation thing is demoralizing, it pretends to represent as real what is otherwise not. It does not represent the mood of everybody in this country. Whatever you say as "We", is only a presentation of what you think all of us are thinking, but you add no caveat to it. You do not qualify it at all.
Words are powerful vehicles of ideas, please use them more wisely.
Cupped the unfortunate present scenario of our country in the best possible way."What We Await?" Is the last question on every citizen's mind atm!!!
cupped the unfortunate present scenario of our state in the best possible way.....What we await!?is the question on every mind aTm......................................
"It might explain the quick loss of momentum in the online debates, although that might just be because both sides discovered it’s difficult to type with just one hand."
Anyone finding it difficult just isn't practicing or trying hard enough. But, the topic is about mediocrity in all areas so it may just be pointing out the obvious.
I'll leave it there and let the imagination of others frame the visuals in the best or worst way possible.
Another brilliant peice by Sami Shah
Latin America with all its flaws is producing better leaders. Even the Islamists in Turkey have produced better leaders. Why should Pakistan one of the most populous countries in the world look for poor quality leadership. You should check out what other leaders are doing.
where are my words gone, I don't really know how to praise this piece of writing. It is marvelous. you just put conclusive remarks to all the things.
Hilarious piece, you had me in stitches!

BTW, I don't think you intended this since they were split across paragraphs, but on first read it seemed you were referring to Veena Malik photos as the available option in the second sentence... :o)
@Author Take a trip down the memory lane (or time machine) and u will realize the 10 days of Muharram without a major incident is an achievement. Our Shia brothers have suffered immensely in the past, not only in recent past, not only at the hands of TTP. It is a huge job securing processions in every small, medium and big city of the country over 10 days. Give credit where it is due. Well done to Malik Saab, his team and how can one not mention the Buturaab Scouts - these kids do a wonderful job.
One of the most interesting articles I have read through Tribune.
Pakistan Zindabad, loved your style.
//although that might just be because both sides discovered it’s difficult to type with just one hand///
ROFLMAO!
How true! Thanks for a great Op Ed. You hit the nail right at the head. The fact still remains that we are a great nation with the bombs to eat and cure all social evils!
"it’s difficult to type with just one hand" - you speak for my wehshat Sami ;p
Unfortunately this is the true picture. Brilliantly written
When you hit your stride you're unstoppable and you hit your stride with your opening three sentences.
Simply awesome commentary on social state of affairs. No news is a good news after all. This is the best piece I have seen from you since your article on how we are victims of victims.
Summation of (mis)events.
So what do you suggest to be done under the circumstances? Criticizing the wrongs are good but then you must come out with viable alternatives to improve the situation.Unless the intelligentsia does it, making jibes on the issues wont make any difference.
What a nice piece this is. I really liked the version of our worthy minister requesting - or claiming to have requested - Taliban not to attack. Just that someone went to Kabul to attack Shia Shrines there. We are at 0 again - unless Americans leave us un-nude!
