During a meeting with UN secretary-general’s special envoy on HIV/AIDS in Asia Dr Nafis Sadik, Gilani had initially recommended former prime minister Benazir Bhutto for the prize. After Dr Sadik apprised him that the peace prize cannot be conferred posthumously, Gilani nominated renowned social worker Edhi.
The prime minister said that he was personally monitoring the polio eradication campaign and governor Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, chief ministers and prime minister Azad Jammu and Kashmir were required to regularly submit progress reports. He attributed the increase in polio cases in some areas to the recent floods and cross-border movements. Dr Sadik said there was low prevalence of AIDS in the country but the upward trend was worrisome. She asked Gilani to give prominent media coverage to the AIDS Day being observed on December 1, throughout the world.
Nishan-i-Imtiaz
President Zardari approved the conferment of the Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military), upon naval chief Admiral M Asif Sandila, on the prime minister’s advice.
Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military) is awarded to officers of the rank of general or equivalent for distinguishing themselves by meritorious service, according to a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar.

Well, its very good if adhi sahab gets a nobel prize because nobody is much deserved of this prize than adhi
Finally someone recognized this great human being's enormous efforts for Human Welfare. He was due for this award long time ago.
Noble Peace Prize lost its value and got tarnished when it was awarded to Obama. They can restore its value and shine by awarding it to A.S.Edhi and his Foundation.
@shazia : i was really hoping there was someone except me who would say that nobel prizes arent trustworthy.
i think this is the first good thing which peoples party doing.....
Nobel peace prize is ONLY awarded to controversial people ..... since Maulana Edhi is not controversial for almost anyone, i presume he does not stand a chance ... Although highly appreciable act by the PM
It will an honour for Nobel Committee if they decide to confer Noble prize to Edhi .. Every Pakistani should be all for it.. Well done Gillani.
@shahid hussain: i totaly agree with you shahid long live Ehdi sahib
I am surprised Gilani put Benazir ahead of Edhi! I also think a man like Edhi is worth a 100 nobel prizes; maybe the nobel peace prize does not deserve Edhi.
@sajid: pls pls pls i beg of everyone to not compare Abdul-Sattar Edhi to Barrak Obama....... there is no comparison.. Absolutely none. plus nobel prize is an award i do not trust.......
@zalim singh!! Yes you are right coz, they have given it to Obama Hence decreased "the value" of a Peace Prize. Abdul Sattar Edhi deserves much much much better than just a Noble Peace Prize. huh!
the peole like abdur sattar sab edhi born after hundred years, the history remember them for a long time for their great services .such people are rule models for humanity to bring prosparity, happinessess, peace, harmoney in this world.
@Mohammad Ali Siddiqui this is not true, For your information! two Arab Muslim women got nobel awards this years.
Barak Obama or Cameron or sarkozy. For killings legit libyan government forces.
There is no doubt that Edhi foundation is doing phenomenal work in Pakistan and rightfully they are respected by all Pakistanis. However, countries do not get to nominate recipients for Nobel Prize. It is the prerogative of the Nobel committee alone.
Gilani is just playing games.
@zalim singh:
Singh, try relaxsingh.
He'll be a worthy successor to Obama.
This is a very good nomination- i would suggest that even India should support this suggestion- I am an Indian but i truly believe that Edhi Saheb is a saintly person and he deserves the highest award- May Allah bless him with more success, resources, and happiness-
@Mohammad Ali Siddiqui: I think we might be off the mark by making such a bold assumption. Nobel Peace Prize Committee is still made up of human beings who can distinguish between what is genuinely good and bad. I don't think there would be a human being on earth who would really know about Edhi's work and ignore to acknowledge or appreciate it.
Great news, mashallah. There is a facebook group as well http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=4060404550
@Mohammad Ali Siddiqui:
Sorry to hear about that on your alternate reality earth.
On our earth, since 9/11
Shirin Ebadi won Nobel Peace Prize in 2003.
Mohamed El Baradei won Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.
Muhammad Yunus won Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.
Tawakul Karman, shared with 2 other women, won Nobel Peace Prize in 2011. This was despite the religious supremacist massacre committed by Anders Breivik whose demands of Norway to be anti-Liberal, anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant, but the Norwegians did not subscribe to that ideology of hate.
If only we could clone him. One of the most deserving persons for this honour.
Just hope he doesn't get penalized for the Nobel because of our own government's representative boycott of the Nobel Peace Prize ceremonies for winner.Liu Xiaobo, due to Chinese pressure.
Noble Peace Prize is not awarded to Muslims any more.
Muslims after 9/11 terrorists attacks on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon have been branded as terrorists, how could noble peace prize committee can recommend the name of Abdul Sattar Edhi?
This is the dilemma which one can not overcome.
This will be the best thing ever happened to Pakistan, if Abdul Sattar Edhi gets Nobel Prize, but he is not a Jew or American or European or.....................let us all pray for him & above all Pakistan!!!
my request to all the readers of ET is to please join this page for Abdul sattar edhi , Give the 2010 Nobel Prize to Abdul Sattar Edhi on face book.
http://www.causes.com/causes/402196-give-the-2010-nobel-prize-to-abdul-sattar-edhi plz join this page, if you want to nominate him for nobel prize.
@Parrotsforpeace...U can view the English subtitles by clicking "CC Tab"
No one deserve this more than him...We as a Nation should demand for that...
He deservs better than crap of Nobel. Best wishes for Mr. Edhi.
i have worked with mr abdul sattar edhi in 2005 earthquake and 2010 flood relief in pakistan,he is a gift to pakistan,he is more nobeler than the nobel peace prize,i have mentioned his work on u tube 'haroon noormohomed flood relief 2010'.i am south african and whatever we can do from here to nominate him we will do.
Well deserved nomination and I hope Mr. Edhi is awarded the Nobel for his outstanding contribution to the society without any religious prejudice (which is very hard to come by in Pakistan). Long live Edhi!
@Shahid: Excuse me Sir, What this news has to do with "Bhuttoism"???
Great men like Edhi deserve more than Nobel Peace Prize.....
@zalim singh: Are you jeolous??? If a Pakistani nobel man wins Nobel Prize.
Negative Mentality.
Would it be possible for this video to be english subtitled in order to reach more people? I still need to learn Urdu, but until then, I would like to know what Edhi is saying.
It is the time that the world recognizes his unmitigated dedication to serve the humanity especially those unfortunate whose existence this world has long forgotten. Nobody deserves Nobel Prize more than him.
In these days when Muslims are becoming famous for their extremist views and actions, Edhis are a shining example of what a Muslim should have been. When it comes to giving examples of great Muslims in recent history there are not many. However, Edhis stand tall among the Titans of the world.
If I have to choose one person/couple without a doubt they would be Edhis. He is the living legand and most selfless person/couple. Glad that the democratic govt made one more selection most popular among masses. We all love you our idol Edhi.
It was overdue to be nominated and can be pursued with solid achievements his organization gained over a long period of time for the poor and needy. This could have been a shared Peace Prize between Him and his Wife together. Wishing the best to succeed.
@zalim singh
Your myopic, narrow-minded, hate-filled ideology does match with discussion about a noble man like Edhi. So, please cease and desist.
ET missed out the word "finally" from the heading. It should read: "Finally, Gilani nominates Abdul Sattar Edhi for Nobel Peace Prize"
nobel peace prize and Pakistanis dont match...
Now, lets see how Noble the Nobel peace prize committee is!!!
Long Live Bhuttoism. Long live people's rule. A great decision indeed.
This is awesome news.. I pray that Edhi wins the nobel prize ..
Allah bless you Sir
Now this is one of the few good things done by our government. Edhi is my hero. I salute you Edhi sahab. If the noble peace prize can go to people like obama then I cannot see a reason why someone like Edhi should not get it.
