Tribune Take: Sherry, in line with the establishment
Muhammad Ziauddin, executive editor The Express Tribune, says Rehman is a consensus candidate, one that is approved by 'the powers that be' in Pakistan; the executive, the establishment and the United States of America.
The appointment comes after Husain Haqqani was asked to resign by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in the wake of the Memogate scandal.
Ziauddin says although Rehman is an experienced journalist who has received her political training by former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, she will be the inexperienced one amidst the powerful women in DC, namely US secretary of state Hillary Clinton and Indian ambassador Nirupama Rao. However, back home he says the establishment should be pleased with Rehman's representation of Pakistan.

When I read "REHMAN appointed as ambassador" on DAWN.COM, i totally freaked out. No, not Rehman Malik please.But again you can expect anything form this government.

We needed more mature, seasoned and experienced ambassador in the US at this critical juncture of Pak-US relations. But, it seems, our present leadership does not care for national interests.

This could only happen in Pakistan, Sherry Rehman served as a minister. In any country (including African nations) minister is more powerful than ambassador, how can she be demoted and she will now report to the young Heena Rabbani.. Whav... This is crazy...
Salman Bashir would have been the best choice.Professional career diplomat, brother of noman bashir (acceptable to the khaki boyz) and in line with present developments.But if you are in through a NRO government (support of the USA/UK) than you need someone who is more loyal to your government than the state.The ambassador should be good in english as he/she will have to write op-eds in WP & NYT on behalf of the president of pakistan.....the lady fulfill all the qualities.

I hope she is quick on her feet -- suspect the first question that every American politician is going to ask is why hasn't Pakistan taken steps to eliminate those who were hiding OBL. - that's what your prior Ambassador promised when he said you were going to investigate the incident.
