Lawyers start fighting in civil court hearing

LAHORE:

The lawyers for the respondent and plaintiff and their colleagues got into a brawl during the hearing of a civil case on Saturday.

The dispute in Civil Judge Mubashir Nadeem Khan’s court began after Jawad Ashraf, counsel for a town municipal officer, informed the judge that the TMO would not be appearing as he was busy. The court had already issued several non-bailable arrest warrants for the TMO, but he had ignored them.

This led to a heated debate amongst the attorneys and the eventual fisticuffs. Eyewitnesses told The Express Tribune that Advocate Jawad Ashraf had insulted the plaintiff’s counsel, Advocate Rai Nawaz Kharal, stating that he was fighting the case but could not even read the order. Another lawyer standing behind them came forward and asked Jawad to stay quiet. Jawad pushed that lawyer away, telling him to mind his own business. Another advocate named Ashfaq Bhullar stepped forward and slapped Ashraf. Then it became a free-for-all and the lawyers fought each other. The judge asked them to stop, then quietly retreated to his retiring room as the punches flew.

Later, lawyers from both sides were seen making phone calls to colleagues to join them. Soon more lawyers assembled at the venue. But there was no more fighting, as the lawyers got together in the bar room to discuss the matter after it was brought to the attention of the Lahore Bar Association (LBA).

Ashraf submitted an application to the LBA complaining that he had been thrashed by some lawyers while pleading a case at the civil court. He said in his application that a lawyer interrupted his arguments and incited other lawyers.

Ashraf, speaking to The Tribune, blamed it all on Rai Nawaz Kharal, saying he had planned it all. He denied insulting Kharal in court.

LBA president Shehzad Hassan Shaikh has invited both parties to his office on Monday to settle the matter.
