KALLAR SYEDAN: A 48-year-old bridegroom was thrashed by his in-laws during his wedding ceremony at Kallar Syedan on Thursday, after they learnt that the jewellery he provided was fake.

Akhtar was also forced to divorce his 17-year-old bride. Guests at the ceremony left as soon as the incident broke out, leaving the bridegroom at the mercy of his in-laws.

The incident took place in Dehmali village, in the outskirts of Kallar Syedan.

It was Akhtar’s second marriage. His first wife has been living with her parents for the last 12 years after a falling out with her husband, police said. After tying the knot with his new wife, Akhtar presented 12 carats of jewellery to her.

However, on closer inspection her relatives found that only four bangles were authentic.

The bride’s parents and other relatives then started beating up the groom and forced him to divorce the girl.
