During a visit to Mauritius, Vice Chairman Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP), Rafique Suleman, urged the country to give a fair share of opportunity to Pakistani rice exporters in its market.
He said Pakistani rice is very famous for its taste and quality around the world and in the last fiscal year 2009-10 they exported 12,632 tons valuing $5.3 million to Mauritius.
“All rice shipments have to be cleared through the Quality Review Committee (QRC) after a proper inspection,” Suleman said.
Suleman is leading a 15-member trade delegation to Mauritius, Madagascar and Comoros. In the first phase, the delegation visited Mauritius where it met with relevant chambers of commerce, ministry officials and leading rice traders.
Showkutally Soodhun, Minister of Trade and Industries of Mauritius, in a meeting with the REAP delegation said the State Trading Corporation (STC) of Mauritius issues an international tender every year for the import of 20,000 tons of rice.
Suleman praised Honorary Ambassador of Pakistan in Mauritius, Major General (retd) Muhammad Siddiq, for making all the arrangements for the delegation. The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) also won praise for coordination with the high commission to increase rice exports and capture maximum market in Mauritius.
