GILGIT: The government on Sunday finalised security plan for Eidul Azha, police and administration officials said.

“All arrangements are in place; we hope for peaceful observation of the Eidul Azha festivities in the coming days,” said Usman Ahmed, assistant commissioner, Gilgit. He added that worship places are of particular importance in the plan, stating that in addition to police, rangers and scouts will patrol the city in case of an emergency.

Superintendant of Police Wasil Khan told The Express Tribune that Gilgit has been divided into four zones and each zone placed under the authority of a senior police officer.

Scouts will be available to assist the administration in maintaining order in the capital city.

Foolprooof security has been ensured by deploying extra force at Eidgahs and religious places, he said. Walkthrough gates have been placed in the main entrance gates with plainclothed policeman and local volunteers. He said heavy police and other forces will be deployed at sensitive spots.

Khan said that community volunteers would also assist law enforcement agencies to ensure a peaceful culmination of religious congregations.

Another security official said that local volunteers will also do body search of people at entry gates, since they are better acquainted with the area and people. He added that the role of secret agencies has been increased.

Furthermore, the main routes of the region are being supervised as part of the plan.

“Documents of all those entering G-B territory are thoroughly checked and suspects are treated accordingly,” he said.

The main routes being supervised are Karakoram Highway and Gilgit-Chatral road linking Ghizer district with Chitral, via Shandur.
