KARACHI:
Pakistan beat Sri Lanka 71-9 in their second match at the Kabaddi World Cup in Chandigarh, placing their followers at ease after an opening-round 43-39 loss to the US.
Pakistan started strongly against the Kabaddi newcomers Sri Lanka, leading 21-9 from where on they did not let the opponents score.
“Sri Lanka is the easiest team to beat and I am not really satisfied with the team’s performance because of that,” Pakistan Kabaddi Federation (PKF) Secretary Muhammad Sarwar told The Express Tribune. “Losing to the US in the first match was a major setback. Before that defeat, we were very confident that we can reach the final but now the western teams are looking better than ever. It means that kabaddi is growing as a sport.
“However we still have three more matches to play.”
Pakistan, who are placed in Group B with the US, Italy, Argentina, Spain, Norway and Sri Lanka, will now take on Italy on Monday. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals that will start on November 18.
Meanwhile, in the other matches, Norway defeated Argentina 62-25 and the US overcame Italy 56-37. The US lead the group after winning both their matches while Italy, Norway and Pakistan have won a single match each.
In Group A, India and Canada have won two matches each, while UK and Australia defeated Afghanistan and Nepal in their matches.
