The jail was becoming overcrowded with 6,000 prisoners but after the announcement of the National Judicial Policy, the number has gone down to 4,500. Talking to The Express Tribune, Superintendent Adiala Jail Saeedullah Gondal said that the prison was built for 2,000 prisoners. He said that if the judicial process became more efficient, the number of prisoners would be reduced and better facilities like food and lodging could be provided.
When asked about the construction of a separate women’s jail, he said that 87 acres of land had been acquired and construction would soon begin.
He added, “We have received threats from unknown assailants and security has been tightened with 400 police personnels, including rangers deputed at the prison.”
