Participants of the District Labour Forum (DLF) on Tuesday expressed their concern over the rampant violation of industrial workers’ rights and demanded concrete steps for a labour-friendly environment.
They criticised exploitative entrepreneurs for not registering their factory workers with EOBI and Social Security departments. Resultantly, working conditions, wages and rights of industrial workers are thrown into chaos. Furthermore, non-registered workers, especially women, are not paid the minimum wage which makes an unskilled worker entitled to Rs7,000 monthly salary, the speakers said.
The forum also discussed at length the delaying tactics used by entrepreneurs when facing litigation by workers. The meeting asked the local labour department to pinpoint the industries that are not paying their workers in line with the Minimum Wage Act.
The forum also discussed the problems of rickshaw drivers who complained of facing frequent and unnecessary fines by the Haripur City traffic police.
The Sahara Development Foundation (SDF), a local civil society organisation, arranged the forum. District Coordination Officer and DLF Haripur Chairperson Syed Mohsin Shah presided over the meeting.
Representatives of Hattar Industrial Estate, NGOs, and office bearers of various labour organizations were also present.
