The Gilgit administration has launched a drive to beautify the mountain region’s capital city and started repair of all roads which have been damaged due to heavy rainfall and increasing traffic. Under the beautification drive, the Main Bazaar Road, NLI Chowk Road, Airport Road and other major roads will be repaired.
Rehmat Hayat, a local shopkeeper said he was glad to see development work taking place in the city after a long time.
“The poor condition of these roads are irritating and need to be repaired,” he stressed.
An engineer supervising the project said that the work would soon be completed, adding that they were repairing one side of the road at a time to cause minimum disruption to the traffic.
Gilgit-Baltistan Minister for Works Muhammad Naseer Khan told The Express Tribune that PWD will pay equal attention to all other roads which need to be reconstructed.
The roads in Gilgit have not been repaired since 2008 due to lack of funds. The residents claim that the construction of roads have been left incomplete by the contractors at certain places.
