Milking it for what it’s worth

FAISALABAD: The Punjab government has decided to establish a Meat and Milk Safety Agency (MMSA) in the province to develop and set the standard for inspection of animal products.

The MMSA also aims to process animal organs and the provincial government has expressed its hopes that the agency will help the country garner substantial foreign exchange by exporting milk and meat as per international standards and requirements.

A Livestock and Dairy Development Department spokesperson said that the new agency had been established with an object to ensure wholesome and hygienic meat and milk.

“The agency will serve both the national and international market. It will process products for domestic consumers and help attain the standard required by the regional as well as international market,” he said.

The livestock official said that the importance of public health, hygiene and the wellbeing of the citizens was the Punjab government’s top priority.

The spokesman said that the MMSA was acquiring the services of intentional reputed firms with prior experience in this arena so that it could achieve its goals and objectives in time. He said that the establishment of the agency with its centres throughout Punjab, would help the government fetch huge foreign exchange from the middle east and other international markets by exporting standardised milk and meat from the Punjab. “This will also bring prosperity to the rural areas that presently lack incentive in the dairy and meat product industry,” he added.
