LAHORE:
A consumer court has issued notice to the chief executive of a laser eye surgery centre for October 22 after a woman sued him for Rs500,000 for allegedly botching an eye operation.
Iqra Ashraf, a resident of Mandi Bahauddin, filed a petition in the consumer court contending that Nadeem Amine, chief executive of Laser Vision Centre, had told her at their initial meeting that after laser surgery she would not need to use glasses ever again.
She said she paid Rs30,000 for the surgery but had trouble in her recovery, despite taking all the precautions suggested by the centre. Two months after the operation, she said, she got herself checked by an eye specialist in Mandi Bahauddin and he advised another operation since she was still short-sighted.
Ashraf said she returned to Laser Vision Centre in October 2008, April 2009 and January 2010 for consultations and check-ups but the respondent was unable to help her and her eyesight deteriorated.
She asked the court to direct the respondent to pay her Rs300,000 for the “physical embarrassment and mental torture” and Rs170,000 for the inconvenience, and return the Rs30,000 she paid for the surgery.
Mubashir Sohrawardi, marketing manager of Laser Vision Centre, told The Express Tribune that they would contest the suit. He said that the client had not visited the centre as advised for check-ups. He said they had medical records showing her condition was better than she claimed.
They also had the consent form she signed which informed her that there was no guarantee that there would be no side-effects. He said that the chief executive was abroad. He said that Ashraf was operated on by a qualified surgeon.
