Workshop: Imparting Chinese to be made easy

Local Chinese teachers to get instruction material in Urdu.

ISLAMABAD: To build a bilingual platform between Chinese and Urdu practitioners, a teachers’ training workshop was organised by National University of Modern Languages’ (NUML) Confucius Institute here on Sunday.

The two-day workshop, titled “Urdu version of Chinese learning materials workshop in Pakistan”, also aimed to improve the medium of instruction for Chinese language by providing local teachers with instruction material in Urdu.

Head Chinese Department NUML Prof. Lei Weizhong delivered a lecture on international curriculum for teaching Chinese language and to compile a local depository of learning material for Chinese language. He remarked in his speech that there is a dire need to train young teachers so they can teach Chinese using easy techniques in local schools and colleges. He also discussed the teaching plans and translation methodologies of the Chinese course into Urdu.

The workshop moderator, Director Confucius Institute NUML Dr Ge Lisheng, emphasised the importance of the Chinese Language for Pakistani students. He said that the language comprises of various cultural aspects and the teachers must make sure to incorporate them in the curriculum.

Zhang Tiejun, a lecturer from the Confucius Institute, also gave a presentation on how to obtain and use the Chinese Learning materials from the Chinese textbook Hanban and discussed the syllabus.

During the second session, Zhang Haiwei of the Confucius Institute delivered a lecture on the use and extension of the main Chinese learning materials and presented book reviews of “Learning Chinese with me” and “Chinese Paradise”.

Model lectures by teachers of Confucius Institute and Chinese Language department were discussed by the committee for making improvements in lesson plans. At the end of the seminar, the participants were given assignments on teaching methodologies of Chinese language, along with the Urdu version to practice the teaching skills and to localise the Chinese textbooks.

A total of 43 Chinese teachers and trainers from institutions including the Institute of Space Technology, Muhammad Ali Jinnah University, Modern Language School and College Islamabad, Roots School System Rawalpindi, Pakistan Scouts Cadet College Mansehra, Fast University, Aitchison College, Macx College Lahore, Nusrat Jehan Academy Girls Chanab Nagar, Chinese Language Tutorial Centre, attended the workshop.
