SWAT: The apple orchards in Swat, spread over 7,400 acres with an annual produce of over 50,000 tons, remain neglected by the agriculture department.

The apples of Swat are not only enjoyed by people across the country, but they also have a sizable international following.

“Swat produces a number of unique varieties of apples, which are sold all over the world but due to lack of proper planning by the agriculture department, we cannot maximise production,” said Swat Fruits and Vegetables Association President Rehmat Ali Khan.

According to apple orchard owner Gul Roz, 28 types of apples are produced in Swat. “Among these varieties, Red Delicious, Royal Gala, Spartan, Kala Kola, Golden Delicious and Golden Super are prominent and produced in abundance,” he said.

“Initially these apples were only sold in Pakistan, but recently we have started exporting them as well which is bringing in a lot of money. The fruit industry has become a source of livelihood for many people,” Khan said.

Riaz Khan, who has been working as a fruit dealer for many years, said that even though these apples have high demand, local dealers are unable to capitalise on it. The fruit vendors in urban centres make all the money, while local dealers have to settle for much less. “If the government provides us with technical assistance and proper roads to the cities, we will be able to earn much more,” he said.

Upper Swat is the largest fruit producing area which is known for its high quality apples, peaches and persimmons. In the last three years, the agriculture sector has been severely affected due to the devastation caused by militancy and floods.

“The biggest hurdle we face is lack of infrastructure, due to which we don’t get access to large markets,” said Gul Bacha, an owner.

Thousands of tons of apples are being wasted due to lack of technical expertise and infrastructure, while the production also remains limited. The profit generated from the apple industry in Swat can be increased by a substantial margin if the government shifts its focus and resources towards it.

It isn't apple "production", it's apple produce, yield, or any other term referring to agricultural output, but not manufacturing output. Your headline reads as though you were referring to Apple, the company.
