LAHORE:

‘I won’t leave you till I die’ is Basir Mahmood’s attempt at studying the lower-middle classes in Pakistan by projecting images from their lives alongside various landscapes.

His work is on display at Grey Noise Art Gallery situated near Bhatta Chowk.

Curator Umer Butt says the collection includes works undertaken by Mahmood over the last year. The Lahore-based artist has graduated with distinction from Beaconhouse National University.

A photograph of a man with a scenic background is meant to signify a mirage. Superficially, it appears that the man has been photo-shopped into the picture containing a view from Northern Areas of the country. On closer inspection, however, the onlooker realises that the landscape is depicted on a bed sheet and a tapestry containing the man has been placed on it.

Mahmood’s appliquéd work on white canvas is also deceptive.

The Islamic Lion and The Goat particularly attract the visitors. This is Mahmood’s second solo show at Grey Noise. The artist will be representing Pakistan at the Asia Pacific Triennial at Queensland Art Gallery in Australia next year.

The show will continue till October 22.
