Medical awareness: DCOs to be held responsible for polio outbreak in their districts

From 2010 to September 2011, 102 polio cases had been reported in the county out of which 19 were in Sindh.

If a polio case is reported in any district of the province, the DCO will be held responsible, said Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah.

“The increasing number of polio cases in Sindh is quite alarming and there should be no carelessness or negligence by the local government officials.” He added that precautionary measures should be taken immediately.

While discussing polio cases in the province at a meeting at Chief Minister House on Thursday, Shah asked the chief secretary to coordinate with and monitor the DCOs, organise meetings to discuss how polio can be eradicated and then file reports on what had been done.

The provincial chief minister added that all efforts should be made by Health EDOs, doctors and medical staff towards eliminating the disease from the province.

Pakistan Peoples Party MNA Azra Pechuho said that the polio campaign should be expanded to union councils. While presenting a report on the progress of the health department, Sindh Health Secretary Rizwan Ahmed said that from 2010 to September 2011, 102 polio cases had been reported in the county out of which 19 were in Sindh.
