ISLAMABAD: About 35 containers full of Indian onions are expected to arrive at the Karachi port in the next few days. Talking to a private news channel, Karachi Sabzi Mandi Market Committee Vice Chairman Asif Ahmad said the vegetables were being imported to meet the local demand, as Sindh’s vegetable crops had been destroyed by the floods. He said tomatoes were being imported from Iran and India while 35 containers of onions were expected to reach the Karachi port in the next few days. He further said the cost of Indian onions was approximately Rs1,400 per maund. “It is imperative that duty is withdrawn on imports for making vegetables easily available to the public at reasonable rates,” he said.
