WAPDA break PPFL losing streak

Defending champions get the better of Navy as HBL beat KPT.

Defending champions Wapda secured a welcome win after five straight defeats in the Pakistan Premier Football League when they crushed Navy 3-1 in Faisalabad yesterday.


Navy’s Asif Bukhsh drew first blood scoring the opener in the 26th minute but Wapda’s Zulfiqar Shah soon netted the equaliser in the 39th minute. Ghulam Abbas restored the lead in the 78th minute and Shahid Baloch sealed the win six minutes before the final whistle.

Wapda are missing their main strikers due to injury and had lost to weaker teams in previous matches, but managed to hold their own against Navy, leaving coach Sharafat Ali a relieved man.

“It’s good to win after so many defeats, we badly needed this,” Ali told The Express Tribune. “It’s definitely given the team confidence. We’re playing with substitutes since seven of our key players are injured. We especially needed to win this match because our next one against Army will be tough.”

Meanwhile, HBL defeated KPT 1-0 in Karachi, with Mohammad Ghazanfar scoring the winning goal.With the win, HBL now occupy third place in the league with 26 points, whereas KPT are placed seventh with 19 points. Wapda’s 17 points have given them the ninth position while Navy are placed 12th.
