KARACHI:

Pakistan boxer Amir Khan put on an impressive show in his opening battle at the World Boxing Championship, overcoming Indonesian pugilist Afdan Bachtila 13-9 in the preliminary round in Baku.

According to details of the event made available, Amir advanced to the next round of the 64-kilogramme category of the tournament, which is also serving as a qualifier for next year’s London Olympics.

The Lyari-based boxer maintained his natural aggressive approach to keep his opponent under pressure. However, the Indonesian gave him a tough time before Amir prevailed in the battle of nerves.

“Amir fought well,” Pakistan Boxing Federation Secretary Akram Khan told The Express Tribune from Baku, Azerbaikan. “But he will have to improve in the upcoming matches.”

While Amir faces an Iranian boxer on October 3 for a place in the prequarter-finals, Mohammad Waseem tackles a Mexican boxer tomorrow.

Mohammad Hussain, the third boxer representing Pakistan, was knocked out in his first clash.
