Nicolas Cage faces on-screen son Bill Skarsgård in ‘Lord of War’ sequel
Andrew Niccol returns to direct the follow-up, which arrives in cinemas on January 22, 2027

Nicolas Cage is returning as arms dealer Yuri Orlov, but his next challenge will come from within his own family in Lords of War, the sequel to the 2005 crime thriller Lord of War.
The newly released trailer introduces Bill Skarsgård as Anton, the illegitimate son Yuri discovers he has. Rather than reject his father’s criminal activities, Anton appears determined to take them further, setting the stage for a dangerous rivalry between the two men.
According to the film’s official synopsis, Anton is a ruthless mercenary mastermind who wants to build a private army and exploit conflicts in the Middle East. His ambitions place him in direct competition with Yuri, with their struggle for power and legacy threatening to have wider consequences for the global arms trade.
Andrew Niccol, who wrote and directed the original film, has returned to handle both writing and directing duties for the sequel. He previously explained that he wanted to explore more of the character played by Cage and introduce someone capable of becoming his ultimate rival.
Niccol said Anton was not interested in correcting his father’s mistakes, but instead wanted to surpass him. He described Skarsgård as an ideal choice to portray the character.
Cage is the only returning cast member from the original film, which also featured Jared Leto, Ethan Hawke and Bridget Moynahan. The sequel additionally stars Laura Harrier, Sylvia Hoeks and Greg Tarzan Davis.
Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi, who produced the first film, are among the sequel’s producers. Cage and Niccol are also producing through Saturn Films, alongside Vendôme Pictures.
Vertical will release Lords of War in cinemas across the United States on January 22, 2027.
