Fighting potential
.

Pakistan's sporting potential extends well beyond cricket, although opportunities to recognise and develop talent in other disciplines remain limited. Mixed martial arts is increasingly demonstrating what Pakistani athletes can achieve despite these constraints. The latest example is Maliha Ali, who secured a bronze medal at the IMMAF World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, after competing with a fractured toe, a bruised eyelid and a partially dislocated jaw. Her campaign included victories over accomplished Russian and Mexican opponents before a disputed split-decision defeat to Russia's Polina Baldina in the semi-final.
MMA has witnessed growing enthusiasm across Pakistan in recent years, with training clubs and combat sports academies emerging in different cities. Young people are increasingly taking up the discipline, while domestic competitions and privately organised events are creating opportunities for aspiring fighters to test their abilities. The expansion of this grassroots culture points to considerable potential for MMA to develop into a competitive sporting industry. Pakistan has also demonstrated its capabilities internationally, having hosted the IMMAF Asian Championships in Lahore in 2024 and produced medal-winning athletes at subsequent competitions. Maliha's twin sister, Manesha, won gold at the IMMAF World Cup in Angola earlier this year, further illustrating the depth of talent available.
However, many aspiring fighters face financial difficulties in accessing facilities and training. The government must recognise MMA's potential and introduce incentives to encourage investment. Greater opportunities for women must also form part of this effort. Pakistan cannot expect its athletes to consistently challenge well-funded international competitors while leaving their development largely dependent on personal resources and private initiative. A structured national programme, supported by regular competitions, would provide promising fighters with a clearer path towards professional careers.
