Dylan Sprouse exposes shockingly low residual payment for ‘The Suite Life of Zack and Cody’

The actor and Phill Lewis also reflected on their close bond years after working together on Disney Channel

Dylan Sprouse has revealed that he received just five cents in residuals for his time on Disney Channel’s hit sitcom The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, despite the show’s popularity and extensive international reach.

The actor made the surprising revelation during the November 3 episode of his Wildmen podcast, where he reunited with former co-star Phill Lewis to discuss their experiences working on the beloved series.

Sprouse explained that the only residual payment he could recall receiving was connected to a crossover episode featuring Hannah Montana.

“The only residual check I have ever received for The Suite Life at all was a crossover episode with Hannah Montana for five cents,” he said, emphasising that he was serious about the amount.

The original series aired from 2005 to 2008, followed by its spin-off, The Suite Life on Deck, which ran from 2008 to 2011. Together, the shows produced around 190 episodes during Sprouse’s time with Disney Channel.

Lewis also discussed the contracts actors had during the production, claiming that episodes could be filmed in large numbers within a calendar year while being counted as a single television season. He suggested this arrangement helped the network avoid paying additional salary increases.

Sprouse described the show as popular but underfunded, while both actors reflected on how television worked before streaming services became widespread. Lewis recalled the programmes airing repeatedly throughout the day and reaching audiences in approximately 90 countries.

Despite the financial discussion, Sprouse spoke warmly about Lewis, who played hotel manager Marion Moseby on the series. He described the actor as a second father figure and revealed that they continue to spend time together and speak regularly.

Sprouse also credited Lewis with helping shape his love of acting, praising his talent and personality.

Both The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and The Suite Life on Deck are currently available to stream on Disney+.
