Saturday Night Live paid tribute to Patrick Stewart during its October 31 episode, honouring the late actor with an archival clip from his 1994 appearance on the NBC sketch comedy programme.
The tribute aired before the show's closing goodnights. It featured Stewart introducing musical guest Salt-N-Pepa during the episode, which originally aired in 1994. The programme also displayed a promotional photograph from his time as host.
Stewart, best known for his roles in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the X-Men films, died at the age of 86 on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. His wife, Sunny Ozell, was by his side, according to a statement released by his representative.
The statement confirmed that the actor had been living with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia, describing his final days as a brief and poignant journey.
“We announce with great sorrow the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia,” the statement read.
It also described how Stewart spent his final moments surrounded by family and friends.
“He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all,” the statement continued.
The statement added that those close to him would remember his peaceful expression and the grace he displayed throughout his life.
